How many possible historical scenarios can you play with this period? |
| MajorB | 07 Nov 2010 2:01 p.m. PST |
Are you asking about the '15, the '45 or both? |

Perhaps you could play more of an ambush/hasty attack scenario. The Jacobites tried before at Clifton to ambush Cumberland's flying column of Dragoons and mounted infantry but their positions were given away by locals ('The 45', by Duffy). Have the Jacobites attack the Hanoverian Forces as their army in divide by the river. Victory conditions could be for the Jacobites to make one attack and withdraw. For the Hanoverians to bring on a general engagement. It's possible seeing once the Highlanders charge command and control goes out the window. cheers Edward |

Old Glory has for sale both of Frank Chadwick's Volley&Bayonet Jacobite Rebellion sourcebooks for the '45. Lots of scenarios, both historical and "might have been". The might have beens are firmly rooted in history Most are battles that could or would have occured if one or both protagonists had marched slightly differently or given battle when battle was declined. The history, uniform and painting guides, campaign scenario etc are well worth the price. The battles are given in actual numbers of troops as well as units. |

The battle of Glen Shiel (1719) would be a challenge to refight: it was fought not on the valley floor, as far as I can make out, but along one of the (very steep) hillsides. |

Glen Sheil was fought all across the glen which is very steep sided, so maybe attaching velcro to your troops bases would be good!!! Main battles of the 45' were Prestonpans, Falkirk II, Clifton and Culloden
Also plenty of small skirmishes depends how small scale you want to go?? It would be a good little campaign
If the Jacobites lose at Prestonpans the effectively lose the war.. |

I have about 9 clans of 18-32 figs each, a small unit of cavalry and some artillery. Its taken me ages to paint all that 28mm tartan, so I want to get the maxium out of this army. I am up for small or big battles. |

Of course, now you need a load of redcoats for them to fight

British regiment of dragoons is out on a patrol. They ride up a ridge that overlooks a village, where a large body of Jacobites are encamped – heeding the call to the raising of the standard. The British Colonel deploys his three squadrons thusly: the first squadron rides off the ridge and attacks the village; the second squadron tries to outflank the village and cut off the Jacobite retreat; the third squadron under the colonel's command, remains on the ridge in support. The first squadron attacks the encampment, but after some preliminary success, hundreds of Jacobites fall in and attack the first squadron, decimating it. The flanking squadron nearly meets a similar fate, and is forced to retreat back towards the ridge. A few survivors of the first squadron make it back to Garryowen Ridge and join the Colonel's squadron. they all dismount to fight. They are overwhelmed by the Jacobites

What about 1688/9 ? You could use some Irish regulars, also you could have Highlanders joining English and Scots loyal to James II to repel the Williamite invaders, the possabilites for what ifs is endless and I haven't even mentioned the Swedes |

That was a rather drastic scenario Der Alte Fritz? Have you been eating your cereal and fresh fruit?? |
Der Alte Fritz | 22 Nov 2010 10:35 a.m. PST |
Mal: I'm surprised that no one in this group has identified the historical scenario that I proposed. Come on guys, it is too easy! |

At least the Jacobites would take POWs. Would King George make Colonel Custer, I mean Colonel Churchill dishonour his parole? |

Add a sizeable SYW French force for a What-if game. |

Der Alte, just seen this nearly two years later. Of course it was the Battle Little McBig Hornish. I remember it well, the Union forces then regrouped and chased the tartan tribe clans back to a corner of their homeland and stuck them all in a reserved area. The Duke of Wayne led the Union troops to a final victory in McMonument Glen. |
Der Alte Fritz | 15 Sep 2012 6:45 p.m. PST |
The point is that you can take any historical battle, encounter or situation and move it into a different time period and get an excellent scenario. |

Der Alte absolutley Correct. I have thinly disguised the Battle of Alma for a FPW scenario. Two Germans Corps attacking uphill over a river against a French Corps hastily prepared. I also took an 1866 scenario (Battle of Nachod) and turned it into a Roman-German tribe encounter. History simple gives us the scenarios and reduces the staff effort to generate our own. |

While on this subject I am making my first tentative moves into this period with the Crann Tara miniatures. Can you recomend a set of rules which work well. |

I am working up a Jacobite variant on TS&TF that is working very nicely for both whole battles and smaller skirmishes, historical or contrived. Black Powder/The Last Argument of Kings pays a great deal of attention to the Jacobite rebellions, so would be worth considering. Wargames Illustrated magazine featured the '45 in three separate issues over this past summer, including a "theme issue" in June, I think it was. I am always coming up with interesting scenario ideas myself -- many feature small battles, raids, and search-and-destroy missions. E.g., I've had Jacobites launch an attack against a manor estate to nab the Prince of Hesse-Cassel; launch a night attack on an artillery park beside a small town to destroy the guns; and attempt to seize supplies accidentally landed by French privateers in hostile Whig clan territory. Conversely, I've sent Government troops to grab key bridges over rivers in advance of the main army, capture French agents hiding in the heather protected by rebel clans, or mount punitive expeditions against Jacobite clans post-Culloden. The skies the limit. |
