Ah, but (particularly with sci-fi) you'd be a fool to miss out of some of the 'not top 5' gems out there… ;-)

I'll agree with Uesugi Kenshin on all points-- except that I'd switch Old Crow and CMG for #'s 4 and 5.

Including the shout-outs at the end.

What about Blue Moon?

Grumpy Monkey06 Oct 2010 3:43 a.m. PST

Blue Moon seems to always get skipped, but I love my Orion Heavy Infantry, and my robot legionaries

JRacel06 Oct 2010 5:25 a.m. PST

I think for me, Bluemoon is a little hit or miss. I like some of the minis, but others do very little for me personally. I think it's part subject matter and part sculpting style that I am not fond of. I love the Reavers and Orion guys. The other issue is that I can't stand their vehicles. They look like they were made from kitbashing other stuff, including Legos, and they just really turn me off. Others like Combat Wombat still sculpt/build their own vehicles from scratch (no CAD work), but comparing CW's vehicles to the Bluemoon ones is not even a contest since CWs do not cause me to mentally disect his stuff into pen caps and Legos. I think that if it was not for the vehicles I would rate them higher.

GZG
Rebel Minis
Khurasan
Eureka

Dont have a 5th.

DinOfBattle206 Oct 2010 6:06 a.m. PST

My top five, based on what I have in my possession, and what I plan on ordering:

Rebel Minis (Their minis got me into collecting 15mm Sci-Fi)
Critical Mass Games
Ground Zero Games
Blue Moon
Khurasan

I would consider using other manufacturers to flesh out some needs here and there, but my main armies will come from the companies above.

Sculptors or manufacturers. Pitor Bitwy has good stuff too. You find the same sculptor at different locations. So is it product itself or product line you're looking at.

I totally agree with GeoffQRF. My opinion may be controvertial, but…

…While the recent surge of 15mm sci-fi has got a lot of new folks in the scale, this scale has been around for a while with some great kit. I agree we do see some cool new stuff on the market, however, a lot of these new ranges and figures have serious flaws like rampant scale creep, figures with distorted body ratios and those that have eaten all the space pies, 10mm/12mm/20mm scale vehicles sold as 15, static poses or poor quality sculpting and more. IMHO good Sci does not make up for bad Fi…

Other manufacturers I'd recommend revisiting, in no particular order:
Brigade Models – they make some great (15mm) vehicles.
QRF – they now make the old Friekorps Colonial Marines (the ONLY ones that are like the Aliens Film)
Laserburn – where else can you get a Judge from 200AD or a Space marine? [I think this is 15mm co.uk?]
RAFM – their Traveller characters still blow away most of the 'new' figs in sculpting quality, and scale compatibility
Peter Pig – in addition to thier other ranges they (used to?) make some nifty pieces like combat robots and drones/markers/civilians way before many others did…
Kremilin minis – they have space samurai with lighsabers and ninjas!
Force XXI – near future grit
Battlestations – bots and aliens
Rod Campbell's bugs (Highlander?)
The old Alternative Armies figs – Crusaders etc

There's more cool stuff out there than most folks realize. A great resource is Dropship Horizon, he does a good job of collating links to manufacturers, and not just the new 'trendy' ones.

Im really hoping by the time this poll gets posted (January?) that there is some additional competition to the traditional top 5 or 6.

Please include a selection for "I don't play 15mm scifi" when this poll comes out.
