Nice list. I agree with most of the films on it. These types of lists always need a little tweaking. Here are a couple movies that should be on the list somewhere.

A.Cemetery Man
B. Evil Dead
C. Boy Eats Girl

No Zombie Strippers?
No Flight of the Living Dead?

But seriously….
Why is Resident Evil: Degeneration not on the list????
I thought it was one of the best zombie movies ever made, and a cartoon to boot.

"we're not counting movies about demonic possession ("Evil Dead" franchise)"

Gathrawn5029 Sep 2010 7:48 a.m. PST

Wow, those rankings were complete crap. How is Night of the Living Dead not #1? How is Day of the Dead somehow not as good as the Dawn of the Dead Re-make or "Deadgirl". B!tch please…

Mongo.

consectari29 Sep 2010 8:04 a.m. PST

How could they list "Dawn" as number one?! All that dashing past zombies and spinning them around was just embarrassingly silly.

If you removed the mall portion of that movie and replaced it with an episode of Scooby Doo, you'd have a better film.

combatpainter Fezian29 Sep 2010 9:00 a.m. PST

Nope. Lots missing from the list-one man's opinion. I would switch the first and the 8th Dawn Remake was better than Dawn Original IMHO. I would also bring "Dead Snow" up to the to 12 at least-one of my favorite movies in a long time.
Also, where is Return OTLD III with the punk rock girl turning zombie and sticking herself with pins throughout. Lol…

And like it or not NOTLD is the BESTEST of all time. This movie was the first to capture and expose the "dead" to popular audiences and it gave life to the modern zombie genre and introduced everything scary about the zombie/apocalyptic premise. It did it in a time (B&W TV) and in a way (Regular Joe as monster and documentary style)that made the movie seem like a news report of something really happening.

I saw it as a kid and man it freaked me out. I must admit that I did have a hyper active imagination.

Im glad to see fido made the list but where's undead or alive?

freewargamesrules29 Sep 2010 9:45 a.m. PST

Same number one as I would choose. DotD original is hands and shoulders above all the others. (The remake should have used a different name).

Dawn of the Dead (original) is my favorite zed flick.
The remakes of "Day" and "Dawn" with runners just rubs against the grain for me.
But I have always and will always prefer classic zeds over runners.

"Dawn" ruined everything "Night" did for zombies. "Dawn" turned a frightening, unrelenting horror into a silly cartoon character that would literally have fit in the aforementioned episode of Scooby Doo.

Forget all the social commentary, forget "man is his own worst enemy". The handling of the zombies was awful and ruined the film. I'd rank the "Undead or Alive" zombies far above those in "Dawn".

9. Day of the Dead

" "Day" initially received tepid reception because it doesn't quite match the impact of the previous two movies ("Dawn" and "Night"). Nevertheless, time makes the heart grow fonder, and "Day" has stood up to be one of the genre's best films over the years."

I saw it last year, and found it just as bad as when I first saw it back in the 80s.

I agree with this statement but I must add that I found the beginning of "Dawn" spot on and effective-the helicopter ride was very cool. They had it going there. Once they introduced the mall zombies with the silly music, it was all down hill from there. Not even the last preposterous mc gang shooout and zombie slaughter could rectify the damage done. He really got way too silly.

Land of the Dead? I still suspect Romero was asleep throughout production or he was surrounded by fan boys that couldn't stop frothing over working with him that they couldn't tell him he was making a bad movie.
Zeder aka Revenge of the Dead… Man, this was a snoozefest of a film and I tried watching it on three different occassions as I grew older. Still a pretty weak film I thought.
Braindead? It's an alright film but nowhere near as highly rated. Course these lists are all subjective and it always an attempt to mix old films with newer ones trying to justify your fave being #1.

I like all the usual ones, plus I will throw in "Carriers" which I just saw last night. Thats more of a "World ending pandemic" flic but still sorta in the zombie genre.

Btw, classic list. Great find!

Luckyjoe30 Sep 2010 7:32 a.m. PST

I was glad to see "Shawn of the Dead" at number 5 but doesn't anybody else think "Zombieland" should be a lot higher than 15? For me it's more like #1 or 2.

combatpainter Fezian30 Sep 2010 12:40 p.m. PST

"Let Sleeping Corpses Lie" is a 92 minute movie. So far I have watched 30 minutes and nothing has happened. One weak attack but barely blood and no cannibalism. I have only seen one zombie so far and heard some really loud and annoying music. Yawn…And this is one of the best????

Oddball01 Oct 2010 6:43 a.m. PST

I've seen about 15 of them. The 1990 remake of "Night of the living dead" is a great film, much better than that piece of dung that was made in the 1980's.

It didn't make the list, which I don't understand.

Coelacanth193801 Oct 2010 9:55 p.m. PST

The original Night of the Living Dead (1968) is my all-time favorite 'pioneering' film, but not my all-time favorite zombie film. The 1990 remake was a much better film and controversial as well (some of the dead were too good).
The remake of Dawn of the Dead was also better than the original, but it needed a bigger budget and a longer running time.
I've read the original screenplay for the original Day of the Dead and it was pure genius. But for some reason, poor George Romero keeps getting cut off at the knees by the bank. Diary of the Dead and Survival of the Dead would've made better ATZ scenarios. Land of the Dead was the weakest of the Living Dead films because the real star of the film which they had pimped to death, the vehicle called Dead Reckoning, mostly just sat there doing nothing.
Shaun of the Dead and Fido are treasures. Billy Connelly deserved an Oscar for portraying the lead character.
28 Days Later was another great zombie film (yeah, I know they're infected, not dead). The sequel quite frankly sucked.
I can't say enough good things about Zombieland.

Hank the Hobo03 Oct 2010 7:33 p.m. PST

I agree, NotLD (remake) is an excellent movie. My top 20 would include NotLD (original and remake), Dawn (original towards the bottom of the list, the remake towards the top), and Shawn of the Dead.

Land of the Dead and Planet Terror (Grindhouse) are entertaining, but definitely not "top" movies in the genre.

I would argue that Slither (not technically zombies, but if we're including 28 Days Later then why not) and Re-Animator (and maybe even Bride of Re-Animator) should be in the top 20.

Also, in case anyone hasn't heard of it, there is a great zombie-apocalypse novel called Day by Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne. I think TMP'ers should probably enjoy it, as the protagonist is military and there is a lot of focus on tactics and realistic use of weapons, etc.
