Just that, supers against the hordes of the undead.

Beyond the satisfaction of unleashing the power onto targets that do not complain…there should be missions and goals that would strain the heroes…save the citizens (5-6 per hero to put some stress as it is hard to protect more than a couple at a time), take out the zombie master/maker, take down the radio tower/factory stack/water tower/etc. (making zombies).

Now this offers a classic comic book ending, where the people made into zombies could be returned to normal living human…or not.

Just a thought.

For me, as normal, I prefer my heroes to be a bit grounded…more street sweepers than icons (no superman level heroes)…strong guys can lift/chuck a car, power guys can melt a car, etc…but most of them are one trick ponies, not the everything in one guy…requires teamwork to defeat the big bad(s).

Fast guy, strong guy, fire/cold/or other guy, flying guy, stretchy guy, etc..

With the current choices of plastic zombies, the hordes part is easy…but what miniature would you use to represent your pinnacle of zombie smashing fun?

Thomas Whitten24 Sep 2010 9:43 a.m. PST

With 28mm it is easy. There is the great Superfigs line from Old Glory. Also there are supers coming from Reaper now as well as a number of other smaller companies with a small selection of superheroes.

"Fast guy, strong guy, fire/cold/or other guy, flying guy, stretchy guy, etc.."

Any one of those would be great for zombie smashing fun. Depending on how the zombie 'infection' spreads, some supers would be better then others.

Angel Barracks24 Sep 2010 9:55 a.m. PST

spider-zombie and bat-zombie gets my vote.

28mmMan24 Sep 2010 10:09 a.m. PST

For sure, freezing guy would be an early favorite :)

If the game were a supernatural superhero game, the powers take a dark twist…I would consider this guy link with a few bits of Batman; the belt, the mask/cowl, etc. or link for a thought (I do not "play" the girl types, but the idea is sound…perhaps a few star ship trooper bug parts and a human together :)

This guy has a nice "Knight" thing going on picture

A fun thought, how about these guys picture

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut24 Sep 2010 11:02 a.m. PST

Of course, HeroClix are still out there by the zillions secondhand, and a lot of them are passable sculpts and cheap; a little paint and they are someone new…

Steve Hazuka24 Sep 2010 3:08 p.m. PST

Well Supers can't kill the Zombies because the cure is in the testing phase and since it can be reversed we can't hurt the innocent right? Knock down blow over freeze ray. But don't hurt nobody.

28mmMan24 Sep 2010 3:53 p.m. PST

Yep…either the zombies could be reversed or they are just zombies.

Which would you prefer…hold back and save the citizen or as Marc said "raging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch's voice
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial?

****

I would be up for either.

Steve Hazuka24 Sep 2010 4:35 p.m. PST

Well any flying Superhero would hover and just start smiting Zombies unless you have Zombie birds. So you have to find a counter to the flying Super.

28mmMan24 Sep 2010 6:19 p.m. PST

…oh there would be zombie crows…oh yes

Kampfgruppe Cottrell24 Sep 2010 7:32 p.m. PST

You gotta have zombie supers too. Nothing like a flying super being chased by a flying zed.

Just imagine a zombified Hulk. Now that is a zombie horde rolled up into one mini.

Watch your back,
Brian

Steve Hazuka24 Sep 2010 9:34 p.m. PST

Instead of becoming a Zombie have Supers become psychotic Supers

28mmMan24 Sep 2010 10:04 p.m. PST

That is a thought. For me, I find that most people play their "heroes" as psychotics already…all wanting guns, blades, death rays, etc.. Killing when the chance comes up. Things that golden or silver age heroes would say are the actions of a villain.

But if you are saying that the heroes are affected by the zombies in a different way, as in going crazy…that would be fun.

*******

I found a couple more miniatures that could be non-classic supers link link link this last guy makes a great "Tombstone" or "Gravestone"

Not sure why I have the supernatural theme going…but four color spandex heroes are a dime a dozen, no need to look for them. There are plenty of good superhero types out there to be had.

I could see a Doc Savage with bronze skin (no bitey issues) punching his way through waves of zombies. This is a big collectible, but you get the idea link here is one link

28mmMan25 Sep 2010 7:41 p.m. PST

The next thought would be which powers fare best when deal with zombiefied citizens? If you can't "kill" them, because they could be turned back…..

entangles…glues, earth/ice, etc.

knockback/down…shock waves, air, bouncing, etc.

stunning…electric, judo chop (I know…), etc.

You know, those oddball powers that are colorful and fun, but are hardly taken because everyone wants the planet crushing strength, deathrays, unbreakable claws, guns, etc..

What sort of character(s) would you "make" (in game terms "pick" from the global community of heroes) to deal with these soft targets?

PS
Certainly a big brain science guy or a magic type could create a cure on the fly or with flies, that would be a great thing to be sure.

**********

Keeping with the supernatural theme…I would include this guy link as Tombstone, he carries the headstone he was buried alive with in that New Jersey off the road cemetery the mob used for special clients and dumping toxic waste…so he looks supernatural, and he is actually "undead", but his strength and power comes from the toxins and his desire for vengeance…his axe can not harm the innocent or truthful…the ax does quadruple damage to inanimate objects (damage like being hit by a speeding truck) and evil…so in theory his ax swung at a zombie would pass through the zombie leaving the human unharmed (unless that human was an evil type).

Keeping with my preference for street level power level, the ax's limited power affect is good, he should have some decent strength (going WYSIWYG with this one) so say 3-4 normal men (600-800lb lift) and some decent toughness (bulletproof vest skin?)…and a weakness to something common, but maybe unknown…like salt…salt is his kryptonite…so a dip in the ocean would be a bad thing glub glub…he doesn't need to eat/drink/or sleep but does it anyway trying to fit in and get something of his life back (he can't taste anything, so many a joke ensues…watch the salt intake)…but as most everything has some added salt he suffers through mild illness in silence to be one of the guys when off duty.

But still a complex and fun character made from a great miniature.

And you?

Steve Hazuka25 Sep 2010 9:06 p.m. PST

They are super soldier enforcers of the church. Souls trapped in a purgatory/limbo until they repair the damage done they've done in life. Unwilling heroes trying to repent. Hans Von Armenstiffen ex Nazi-hitler youth in command of a SS Field unit burning Russian and Polish villages to the ground (Polish catholics) does the Heil Hitler thing and a force blast knocks people and walls over.

Steve Hazuka25 Sep 2010 9:26 p.m. PST

Gladiatoris The oldest of the Heroes Was a Roman gladiator that delighted in killing Christians in the Colloseum. "To see his eyes was to see death" Carries net and Trident. Net expands to capture his target and hold them paralysed in fear. Trident fires out a blast that freezes target. Then Gladiatoris approaches opens his helmet to reveal what no man ever lives to talk about. As thier fleash sears and burns from bone and his victims soul is cast into damnation.

28mmMan25 Sep 2010 10:03 p.m. PST

…wow…that would make an interesting game…

chironex25 Sep 2010 11:19 p.m. PST

I do not need an army of zombies that cannot be permitted to come to harm because they could be turned back into people so easily. That would be one of the worst villain plans ever since the cartoon I saw about a super rabbit who has to deal with a plot by an arch-villain to take over the world by controlling its supply of chocolate.

For the crew I would need one powersuited guy, one flamer, one who discharges crackling energy of some kind and a Titan juicer or similar strength-enhanced character, and most likely a sorceror.
One could be nonhuman, a borg, or a hideous biotech incident given sentience (or part thereof). Not terribly enthused with powers that manifest with no visible means of doing so, and cannot be explained by psionics; so the flying hero presents me with little problem, if they want to attack they're on foot that turn.

@Kampfgruppe Cottrell:
picture
"Stupid zombies try to infect Hulk? HULK SMASH STUPID…..zombies…..rrrrrgh….. Hulk want BRAINSSSsssss……"

Classic heroes/heroines, I don't see any so far that I like for the purpose, not of reasonable quality anyway. I would buy nudes or near nudes and get to business with putty, taking ideas from gymnastic catalogues eg:
picture
Or for a pyrokinetic character:
picture
As long as I can find good enough nudes to base them on…

28mmMan26 Sep 2010 7:49 a.m. PST

Bronze Age has a nice series of generics (nudes) link

And the idea of not hurting the zombies is one side of the coin…a more horror game where they want your brains and you must destroy their heads to make them stop is the other side, which would also offer some gaming entertainment.

:)

Steve Hazuka26 Sep 2010 11:26 a.m. PST

Wouldn't have to be a Supervillian but a spaceborn virus landing all over the Earth in a cosmic meteor storm. Evil people then take advantage of the chaos.

chironex27 Sep 2010 4:36 a.m. PST

28mm man- what species are those nudes supposed to be? I think I'll be staying with the Reaper ones.

28mmMan27 Sep 2010 11:11 a.m. PST

"28mm man- what species are those nudes supposed to be? I think I'll be staying with the Reaper ones"

LOL, give them a chance…in hand they make perfect superheroes, just that slight bigger then the general populace, makes conversion quick and easy.

Seriously, good stuff.

And Bronze Age is great deal with, fast, and a really decent guy.

Yes the Marvel Zombie setting was interesting.

Perhaps a fun process would be that the virus affects people as a whole in dramatically different ways…and the scientists are unsure why…

50% are susceptible to the virus, but can be changed back if not too badly damaged as a zombie

39.9% are immune to the virus

10% are changed permanently into zombie masters/lords, bigger, stronger, tougher…and quite contagious

.01% are turned into super humans…stronger, tougher, faster, smarter…each unique and each powerful in some measure…a few can fly, a few can teleport, a few got much bigger, and a few got much smaller…lots of variety.

*********

A spiderman of sorts would be fun IMO. Wall crawling, web shooting (entangle), jumping, strength, tough. Good for getting out of the way, getting past obstructions, and securing zombies for cure or cull.

The Thing type should be a safe bet…although he becomes a zombie in the boo, it would take a super bite to get through his orange rocky butt.

Being immune or safe from zombie bites/infection is easy enough for the majority of the supers…but it is the "save the citizen" that becomes the issue…it is all well and good that Super Joe is immune to the zombie issue, but if his efforts can not help Joe next door, what good is he?

Then there is the matter of the supers who welcome the power with selfish abandon…those who would not help anyone, but would rather take all they could for themselves.

I wonder in this situation how many would become selfless heroes and how many would become selfish bullies.

I could see a group of villain types banding together to take all they want and leave the world to burn…waiting it out.

The question would be how many would go this route?

Figure .01% of the world's population, so roughly 6-7 million world wide would have powers of some level.

Consider 50% have low power levels, 40% have medium power levels, and 10% have high power levels.

High power level would be (for my game, set your levels where you like) strong enough to stand on their own, so most would be NPCs…as the game would be setup for team play, the medium level would promote this.

*******

So of those 6-7 million powered people, consider 50% make it through the first year…so 3,500,000 powered people world wide, during a global zombie outbreak, how many would be heroes and how many would not be?

28mmMan04 Oct 2010 6:33 p.m. PST

Without a structure to establish and provide rules and guidelines for these supers…I would hazard a guess that the number would be alarmingly high for bad behavior.

"I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King (and there for I extrapolate, the super powered) unlike other men with a favourable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption, it is the other way, against the holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or certainty of corruption by full authority. There is no worse heresy than the fact that the office sanctifies the holder of it. " Sir John Dalberg-Acton, Lord, 1st Baron Acton

I believe it is our nature to act a certain way and with power these behaviors would tend to rear their ugly heads…the later resulting guilt and pressure would certainly drive those marginals to become more than they were and except the mantle and pressures of the title of hero.

It would be interesting either way.

Captain Gideon03 Apr 2011 8:44 a.m. PST

I know that Heroclix made some MARVEL Zombie figures like Spiderman,Wolverine,Giantman and some others.

These figures tied in to their MARVEL Zombies comic book on an alternate earth.

A whole bunch of people have thought about this idea. I can recommend Ex-Heroes. The guy with limited invulnerability, i.e. Can't get bit, is all but a god now.

Been thinking about this lately…after watching the first season of the Walking Dead.

I am seriously considering taking the road less traveled and going back to the roots…zombies made from a magical process, a necromantic process.

A bite from a zombie would hurt like a bite from anyone. The chance from infection would be quite high if not guaranteed due to the fact that the mouth would be absolutely disgusting.

A modern approach to the process, like a computer virus that is actually a spell…infected computers repeat this spell over and over causing the operator to become infected. When the master calls the spell kicks in and all those infected are under the necromancer's control.

Most necromancers use the energy of living things to fuel their magics…so these infected people would be the targets, once under his control their life force would be sucked away into the reserve for the necromancer to use…like a great battery.

Could play it that the energy could be returned to the victims or play it that once removed then the zombie status is permanent.

*****

Other villains could follow suit…vampires, werewolves, witches, fishmen, etc.

*****

The heroes.

In the same vein of thinking I would go with the classics.

Super soldier serums, mad scientist's inventions, etc. More pulp I would guess, even if applied to a modern setting…much like Hellboy…or exactly like Hellboy.

A secret government agency that stands by to bump those things which bump in the night back into the shadows.
