I'm trying to figure out the color of a MiG 21 nose cone that houses the "spin scan" radar. Various photos and drawing seem to be dark green or black. Which is it?

Medium to dark green's usual, but it's painted and can vary – I've seen red for instance. Which nationality are you looking for?

In some of the early MiG-21s, I think it may have even been light gray, but as Dom says, depends on what country, unit and time period. You can also check on wings palette

It's a Russian site so it should be accurate, but it's scans of color illustrations of aircraft, so could vary as well.

I'm doing Egyptian MiGs. The photos they seem to be dark green.

Hey Dom, since your the master of 1/600th (excluding of course Si Tyler) how would you paint the nose? Do you bother trying to put a black ring around the intake?

Most of mine are a hunter green (medium-dark) shade with a black wash – the latter tends to pool in the intake, saving the hassle of trying to paint black there.

Green for the most part…..

Hi

Not intuitive, the paint applied to the nose cone affects the performance of the dish. The dark black green is optimum, everything else is likely a mistake.

Sorry Winward I do decal jobs where decals shouldn't be applied. Gunbird and Dom do me hands down when it comes to painting and Fat Wally's WWII stuff is amazing.

My MiG-21 have a lighter shade of green on the cone. I don't recall what I have done for the Egyptians or Syrians. Grey rings a bell though but I use the TLAR principle which is why none of my stuff is completely finished

I went with a dash of Russian Uniform, it looks pretty good.

Windward -

How about posting a picture?

the corner panel at the upper leading edge of the tailfin was also usually painted in the same green, as was the leading edge of the ventral fin. Presumably these all housed transmitters of some sort?

Note the horrible 58-72 Egyptian roundels, with the tiny stars. You can see them in the blowups, but in real life they are so tiny they are nearly invisible, and you have to spin them to get the stars in the right orientation. Great decals Dom.

Nice job – the camo looks excellent.
