What Sci-Fi books (or short stories) are perfect for getting you in the mood to play a good Sci-Fi skirmish game? |
WKeyser | 22 Sep 2010 2:55 a.m. PST |
Drakes Legion of the Dammed series, how can you not love the Foreign Legion in space! William |
John Leahy | 22 Sep 2010 4:06 a.m. PST |
The Fifth Foreign Legion and Hammer's Slammers books are good. Thanks, John |
Battle Works Studios | 22 Sep 2010 4:18 a.m. PST |
Drake's Slammers stories are good inspiration for bigger fights, but for small skirmish I prefer his Lt. Leary novels. Pournelle's Falkenberg's Legion stories are also good (if slightly dated) stuff, and for pulp, nothing beats Lensmen and Barsoom. |

Battletech books, they are not great literature, but they certainly get me in the mood to play games. Otherwise, I'm in the read any good SF camp. |

The Gaunt's Ghosts series is a great read. I have even recommended it to non-gamers. Abnett is an excellent writer. |

Oh, let me add _Armor_ by John Steakley. |
Only Warlock | 22 Sep 2010 6:48 a.m. PST |
The "Fifth Foreign Legion" books by Keith (Highly underrated IMO), "Armor" by Steakley, "Hammer's Slammers", The BOLO stories by Laumer |
Pictors Studio | 22 Sep 2010 6:56 a.m. PST |
Starship Troopers, Warlord of Kor, the Horus Heresy books. |
jpattern2 | 22 Sep 2010 6:56 a.m. PST |
Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel rat stories for skirmish. Keith Laumer's Bolo stories for OGRE. Bill Keith's Sharuq and Stingray for sci-fi sub warfare. Although I haven't actually gamed it, I'd like to in 1/300, with the carrier-subs off-table and the fighter-subs duking it out. Use Battletech aerospace fighters as fighter-subs. |

"A Small Colonial War" by Frezza. And its sequels. |
Michael B | 22 Sep 2010 7:51 a.m. PST |

Hammer's Slammers & Starship Troopers
|
Twisted Metal | 22 Sep 2010 8:44 a.m. PST |
I recently read a great book called "New Model Army" by Adam Roberts, which I just thought would make a great premise for a game (the amazon blurb could probably explain it better than I could). |
Top Gun Ace | 22 Sep 2010 10:59 a.m. PST |
The Renegade Legion books, Frost Death, and others. |
wminsing | 22 Sep 2010 12:50 p.m. PST |
"Orphanage" by Robert Buettner and sequels have a fair bit of good small scale actions that get me ready for some gaming. -Will |
FingerandToeGlenn | 22 Sep 2010 1:39 p.m. PST |
Ringo's first three Posleen books--before he got into S&M. OK, Bun-Bun would have to be gamed as scenery or as an objective, but what the heck. |
taskforce58 | 22 Sep 2010 2:38 p.m. PST |
Not the entire book, but the one Honor Harrington novel where she and her fellow captives fought their way out of the brig to secure a pair of shuttle crafts to escape from the battle cruiser that was carrying them to the prison planet. That was one heck of a squad level action and I always thought it made for some great scenarios. |
Micman | 22 Sep 2010 3:01 p.m. PST |
No do Bun-Bun in an Ogre scale game. Then you only have to have a bunch of Posleen landers. Would make for a short game I think. |

For my furture wars I use "A Small Colional War" by Frezza and of course Pournelles Falkenberg stories for ideas. I dont think the tech will change much from today and I also dont think you will be draging Heavy Armor divisions around the galaxy. Think it will be mostly light infantry battalions. I try and model more along the lines of how the British maintained their Empire in the 19th and 20th century. Infantry, planes, armored cars and locally recruited units. |
KSmyth | 22 Sep 2010 4:52 p.m. PST |
Gordon Dickson's Dorsai novels. |
Augustus | 22 Sep 2010 5:27 p.m. PST |
Third or fourth "Fifth Foreign Legion" trilogy. Major bummer these are not being continued. Second Renegade Legion series (the three aside from Monsoon) Anything from 40k. |
Uesugi Kenshin | 22 Sep 2010 6:10 p.m. PST |
Interesting suggestions so far, most of which I have never heard of. For me, Starship Troopers is the standard. The Horus Heresy books had some really good books early on but faltered of late ( TMP link ) Other than those, nothing comes to mind. |
BigDan | 22 Sep 2010 7:08 p.m. PST |
I second (or third) the Falkenbergs Legion series by Pournelle. Starguard by Norton is a great read and always has me itching for to pit Mech Vs Arch. Starship Troopers for "armor suite" sci fi. |
Sven Lugar | 22 Sep 2010 8:04 p.m. PST |
Besides most of the ones listed here, I will add Honor Harrington series, & H. Beam Piper's "Space Viking" |
SBminisguy | 22 Sep 2010 9:11 p.m. PST |
Ian Douglas' three linked "hard" mil scifi series are great! I especially see lots of scenario ideas in the Heritage Trilogy, first book "Semper Mars" here: link USMC in space!! |
evilmike | 23 Sep 2010 12:04 a.m. PST |
Space Viking, Uller Uprising by H.Beam Piper. Just about anything written by David Drake. Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein. Falkenberg series by Pournelle. Armor by Steakley. Lensman series by E.E. 'Doc' Smith. |
Top Gun Ace | 23 Sep 2010 1:44 p.m. PST |
I really liked the Dorsai series as well. |
