What do you think of this 40K model? (Chimera variant with a big missile on top.)

Is it cool? Silly? Over the top in a righteous way?

clkeagle16 Sep 2010 7:41 p.m. PST

A battery of Deathstrike missiles is great for assaulting those enemy Titan formations from a safe distance… wait… no, you're not talking about Epic, are you?

In all seriousness, it should never have been added as an option in 40k. A weapon like that, if fired from one end of the table, would be used against a target no closer than the next closest gaming store to where you're playing. If it's just a fun thing to paint up and put in a display case, I say go for it. But I just can't imagine using one in a game of 40k.

Space Monkey16 Sep 2010 7:56 p.m. PST

Yeah, it's ridiculous if used in a game as anything other than an objective…

Dragon Gunner16 Sep 2010 8:14 p.m. PST

"But I just can't imagine using one in a game of 40k."

Sure why not give it a 24 inch range and a 20 inch template. Damage is as many dice as you can hold in two hands.

Little Big Wars16 Sep 2010 8:29 p.m. PST

Such an unrealistically short range too, I mean, only 960"? And it can hit stuff 12" away? What?

I'm hard pressed to justify using on-table SCUDs in Dirtside, let alone in a 28mm game. Wouldn't a missile that big pretty much nuke the entire playing area?

Dr Mathias Fezian16 Sep 2010 8:49 p.m. PST

I was stunned to see it as an option in the Codex. Bizarre.

aecurtis Fezian16 Sep 2010 9:07 p.m. PST

I even got rid of my Epic ones. Silly things, when combat is HTH with chainswords.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik16 Sep 2010 10:07 p.m. PST

I like it. Sure, it's silly when applied to our real world concepts, but come on, this is 40K, where fighting with blades and knives go hand in hand with laser weapons. 40K exists in a 'reality' all by itself.

Barks116 Sep 2010 10:58 p.m. PST

I loved them in Space Marine, back in the day. I recall some kind of missile which popped in and out of the warp to bypass your opponent's void shields.

The new 40K model doesn't do it for me. And you can use it for on-board support?

evilmike17 Sep 2010 1:40 a.m. PST

Yes, you can use it onboard.

It's basically a one-shot tacnuke that takes a few turns to use.

Thus giving your opponent reason to charge across the board in a desperate attempt to kill it before you nuke him.

Stealth100017 Sep 2010 1:51 a.m. PST

If you are doing a scud hunt game its cool but as part of a normal 40k game its a bit pants.

Little Big Wars17 Sep 2010 4:11 a.m. PST

It's silly even in the context of 40k, no amount of psychedelic drugs can convince me that a missile that's about 12" long has a minimum range of 12". Likewise, a missile that big is going to carry a payload that can wipe out pretty much the entire 4'x6' playing area. Unless the payload is magic low-yield fairy dust?

Monstro17 Sep 2010 5:26 a.m. PST

Fabulous!!
You should be allowed to take it to tournaments and strike any other gaming table in the hall.
How much fun would that cause.•evil grin

(I make fun of others)17 Sep 2010 5:33 a.m. PST

I like it primarily for the thought of it leaving the missile rack, sputtering a little, and then falling a few centimeters away.

I put it to you that when used at such close range, the warhead is not armed at all. It just squashes its target -- literally deathstrike.

The Deathstrike is the poster child for 40K -- it shows where their bread is really buttered.

Battle Works Studios17 Sep 2010 5:42 a.m. PST

Who cares if it makes sense? The parts are really handy for kitbashing, and the sprue is loaded with spares so getting them cheap in trade or on the parts market is effortless.

Priorities, people. Anything that feeds the bits box is a Good Thing.

RebelPaul17 Sep 2010 6:22 a.m. PST

Hi

I agree with CLK eagle. The Deathstrike missle launcher is too much, even for 40K Armageddon. I am an IG player and while I love using vehicles, I wouldn't purchase nor use a Deathstrike in any 40K game I was playing, even if it was an Armageddon scenario.

ThorLongus17 Sep 2010 6:32 a.m. PST

I would rather see the mole mortar or the termite apc

Wartopia17 Sep 2010 6:36 a.m. PST

Yes, it's over the top, but still cool. I intend to purchase one and use it as a "tank destroyer" for our home grown sci-fi rules. Light armor but excellent ATGM capability.

(I make fun of others)17 Sep 2010 6:44 a.m. PST

Who cares if it makes sense?

It doesn't have to, but like any other sci fi or fantasy product, it has to allow you to suspend your sense of disbelief. I sat through Star Wars when I was a teenager and thought it was a complete hoot -- I went back and saw it over and over again -- because it allowed me to do so.

The Space Marines allow me to suspend my sense of disbelief too. The Deathstrike? Nah.

And I think the Editor was asking us what we think about the Deathstrike as a gaming piece, not what we think of its scratchbuilding potential.

clkeagle17 Sep 2010 6:49 a.m. PST

ThorLongus,

Here you go. They released a new Mole Mortar:

ThorLongus17 Sep 2010 7:51 a.m. PST

wow, those dk are such nice models, they deserve a better set of rules

Only Warlock17 Sep 2010 8:52 a.m. PST

Can you deploy it in Squadron Strength?

LOL

darthfozzywig17 Sep 2010 9:03 a.m. PST

"Well, I beleive Commissar Hicks is in command."

"I say we don't take off, and nuke the entire site from point blank range. It's the only way to be sure…that we also get nuked."

Battle Works Studios17 Sep 2010 10:41 a.m. PST

It doesn't have to, but like any other sci fi or fantasy product, it has to allow you to suspend your sense of disbelief.

Suspension of disbelief doesn't enter into it for me. I'm not buying it to use as an intact kit, I just want the parts for kitbashing. What you use it for is up to you, but for me, it's a gold mine of nifty parts, and cheap on the secondary market too.

Darthfozzywig: Har!

Lion in the Stars17 Sep 2010 11:30 a.m. PST

It's a cool objective, and I'd take it to a tournament just to throw rounds on other tables.

But I sure wouldn't use it to shoot at something on *my* table.

Wyatt the Odd Fezian17 Sep 2010 12:07 p.m. PST

Tis a silly piece – kinda like a nuclear hand grenade. But then, FASA included the "Behemoth" ("Monster" to Robotech anime fans) picture which mounted two 3-tube cruise missile launchers in each arm.

wolfgangbrooks17 Sep 2010 10:41 p.m. PST

It's no more silly than the grav vehicles the 15mm sf fans are so crazy about. :)

Wouldn't use it as anything other than an objective myself.

Yes it is.

ordinarybass22 Sep 2010 1:48 p.m. PST

Ok, I'm late to the party again. I think the DStrike missile is completely rediculous, and that's why it fits perfectly into 40k. I vote over the top in a righteous way. Big guns, big bullets, big bores and of course big missiles.

It may be a bit much to drop 60 bucks on a kit you won't use that often, but my basilisks have already been built with removable gun decks and I'm definitely planning on someday building 1 (or 3) Deathstrike decks when I find the appropriate cheap toy for conversion.
