Those reenactors are so good acting!. If you look the video, they deserves more credit that some of the "profesional" hollywood actors. link Now the questions. a. Which uniform colors are that?. Grey-blue for the soldiers (as on ACW?)and Dark-blue for the officers? b. The gun was a 4pdr? c. The quantity of stars on the flag were those?. Many thanks in advance for your help. Amicalement Armand |

The uniforms look authentic-the other ranks would wear sky-blue kersey similar to ACW Union trousers and the officers wear dark blue frock coats with kersey trousers. My work computer won't play the full video but I think that there was a 4 or 6 pdr at that particular battle. The stars in the union of the color should be the same as for the number of states at the time. I have 28mm figures from Old Glory and Conquest to paint for the period. |

Tango01/Armand, July 4th is the date the United States officially adds a star on our flag to represent a new state admitted into the Union. When the 2nd Seminole War began on December 23, 1835, the United States flag had 24 stars. On July 4, 1836, the 25th star was added (for Arkansas), and on July 4, 1837, the 26th star was added (for Michigan). The war ended in November of 1842, and the flag received it's 27th star on July 4, 1845 (for Florida). In addition to Doc Ord's comments on uniforms, the U.S. Army began the war wearing the M1833 leather forage cap, often called a "hog killer" or "catfish" cap, and wore them until they were replaced by the M1839 cloth forage cap. Also, it wouldn't be too unusual to see a few broad brimmed hats mixed in within a unit. Great link, Armand, and thanks! |

A big pain to research and paint. But satisfying once you have concluded your journey. I avoid them. |

The uniforms are really identical to those of the Mexican War, with the exception of the hat. I assume reenactors who do one period, do the other too, given the fairly minor differences. I think that about the only thing the same as an ACW uniform would be the trousers. The catrudge box, crossbelts, muskets, canteens, and many other items are different than for the Civil War, perhaps with the exception of some 1861 troops' equipment. That hat is too much for wear in Florida's hot summers; multiple layers of thick leather. Hey, but it folds flat! :) |

By the way, the U.S. Army also issued an all-white cotton uniform, for tropical duty. From most accounts, they were hardly used in the field, or if they were, wore out fairly quickly. Just thought I'd toss that in. |

The Seminole Wars Memorial in Tampa. link And, as pointed out before, Patrols in the Sudan can be easily modified for the Seminole Wars if you want to do something larger than skirmish. |

I have the old Frontier Miniatures booklet retyped and expanded, and with a set of rules in MS Publisher format if anyone is interested. I was hoping to find the original author or someone with Frontier connections to give me approval to reprint the work, but after a few years of searching no luck. PM me with your email address if you would like a copy sent to you, or email me at preds81.ds at gmail.com |
