Hey Guys, Here's the latest addition to my Late Roman project, a fortified high status villa. As usual there's more info and pictures over on my blog, littletinmen.blogspot.com This is my first crack at any kind of wargames terrain, so let me know what you think. Ben link link link |

Nice work, and nice units on your blog! What is Theomar Pius' technique? |

He scores blue foam with a pencil to make stone patterns, seals it with white glue before painting. I used the technique to create the tiling under the porticoes. |

Great looking Villa – I especially liked the tip about the cobblestones (may take a trip out to our local Spotlight and see what they have). Just reading the latest Sidebottom yarn so your blog is quite atmospheric! Was thinking maybe there should be a statue on each side of the main entrance – or maybe looters have already been there? Cheers Garry |

I love the slight bowing of the roofs, almost as though they are sagging under the weight of the tiles. Very tidy indeed! |

As nice as anything that I have seen in a museum. |

Excellent building Ben I really liked the mosaic. We were in Italy last year and your building brings back memories of Pompeii. |

Thanks for all the kind comments guys. I don't suppose anyone has any idea where i should start regarding references for Sassanian Persian architecture? |

Have a look at the latest Sidebottom work on Ballista (V3) – lists some handy Sassanid references. I got my copy from The Book Depository. |

Ben Had a look around my shelves. Dr Kaveh Farrokh's "Shadows in the Desert, Ancient Persia at War" has a few snippets on architecture and engineering that may be of interest. Apparently al-Mansur selected the small Iranian estate village of Boghu-dad as the site of Baghdad. There is reference to the debt owed to Sasanian architecture by the later Islamic states so the traditonal domed Islamic structure might not go astray. Farrokh quotes A J Arberry (editor) "The Legacy of Persian" Oxford The Clarendon Press 1953 and B Lewis (ed) "The Legacy of Islam" London Thames and Hudson 1997. Farrokh notes that the Sasanids redesigned an ancient Greek invention to create a working windmill built within a mud brick tower with air ducts to turn fabric blades. Designed as a corn mill in eastern Iran. Might be an interesting feature! A book I picked up years ago by Dr Georginia Herrman, "The Iranian Revival" Oxford Phaidon Press 1977 has quite a bit on Parthian and Sasanid palaces and architecture. Hopefully some of the above may be available on inter-library loan? Good hunting Cheers Garry |
