For those who don't visit Hat recently, see the work of Mr. Chad Anderson from South Korea about El Cid on 28mm link Hope you enjoy. Amicalement Armand |

They could look better with a good paint job. |

They look fine. Look how up close the piccies are; several/many times actual size. I bet most miniatures don't look any better scrutinized this way. The mass effect is all that counts. His choice of colors is also pleasing. The miniatures as sculpts, now, that is where I don't care much for what I see

I'm not sure about the colors or the composition of the units myself. The colors seem too muted, and the shield designs are too repetitive. What throws me the most, however, are the clumps of white sand on the bases which clash with the dark brown base color. I would have gone for a brighter color scheme and used single rocks painted in a color that complements the basing to produce units that would hopefully be more pleasing to the eye. Oh, and the figures are "meh" at best, like DotDHDL said. Of course, none of this criticism really matters since this is yet another of Armand's thread links and the painter in question will in all likelihood never see the remarks. |

I have some of Hat's 1/72 El Cid miniatures. They are much nicer sculpts. I'm a big fan of plastics, but these just don't look good at all. And the paint job really doesn't help them either

Gentlemen, Actually, these new 28mm figures are capable of looking much better, as evidenced by Scott MacPhee's treatment on his blog here: link And with all respect to Armand, the 2nd link that you posted is to PSR's review of the soft plastic 1/72nd scale set, NOT the 28's. Granted, they are scaled from the same master greens, but the overall treatment is much different in 28mm. While being as tall as offerings from most "main line" 28mm producers (Scott shows a comparison to an OG "pre-paint"), the figures are anatomically correct and extremely slim. I haven't found a range yet that they will really "blend" with in the same army. I have all of the Infantry sets, but unfortunately, HäT have told me that they do not expect to release the 28mm Cavalry for between 5 and 6 months. I will be painting a plastic Islamic army, but don't see much point in jumping into the Infantry if the Cavalry is going to take that long to release. I've done one box of the heavy infantry and am working on some lights and plan to use them as Anglo-Danes for DBA: link Not the best figures but super cheap--a whole DBA army in 28mm for $28! Brittle spears, mind you. Painted up, they match other armies closely enough that the effect on the tabletop is not too jarring. But you can't rely on the sculpting to carry the figures--they need a good painting effort. |

I'm looking to do the Reconquista, or at least an army from it, in 28mm and the Conquest Games 'Norman Knights' have been the clincher that got me started on this. I spoke to the guy at SELWG- really nice chap- and he said that there are rumours of plastic medieval muslim-types coming out. I'm really hoping that these from HaT aren't what he meant. I mean, I appreciate the cost but I really want my army to look good, and frankly I have to say these don't. Leigh |
