I want some – who makes them in 28mm? I think I know the answer, but there should be a good market for them. I just started on some Perry French Hussars, and the sabretaches look like they'd take a transfer very well – they're molded flat and just beg for artistry beyond my capabilities. Steve @ LBMS are you reading this? Dean |

We've all been hoping for this for years. Good luck. |

Dean: Brilliant suggestion. Just consider the massive market post-1700, say. Not only sabretaches but cyphers for corner and holster covers of shabraques, etc., etc. Some transfer-skilled individual has a virtual cash cow awaiting their exploitation. |

Some transfer-skilled individual has a virtual cash cow awaiting their exploitation. I bet they don't
. I have actually looked at doing some (I bought rather a nice book on French hussars a while back), but they're both technically difficult (tiny and very ornate = nightmare to print) and demand fitting to specific models (since a Redoubt sabretache isn't necessarily, or even usually, the same size as a Perry, Front Rank, Foundry, Old Glory, Minifigs etc. one
.) Even if there was a "massive market" (dubious at best
.) it would be for a massive range – I doubt there are many individual codes that would have more than a marginal amount of interest. If and when I get around to picking up a box of Perry plastic cavalry (of whatever ilk) I may well give it a try for them (as the nearest thing to a "standard" size
.) but attempting a comprehensive range would be the thin end of a very very large wedge. Dom. |

The line between painting figures for wargaming and modelling figures for display seems to be becoming ever more blurred

I would've thought it were possible. There are other small transfers/decals already out. Alban sells water-slide decals for British canteens in 28mm. LBMS has very detailed transfers for 10mm, 15mm & 1/72nd. Dean |

Methinks that whatever breakeven price Dom would charge would have him instantly labeled a thief and exploiter. My suggestion? Get a brand new 00000 brush. |

For these items, I would let him rob and exploit me :) |

I make them myself and find it quite easy to do, beats painting anytime. You can print them on regular paper, no need for making waterslides. |

BR: I was considering that too – anything than having to paint them. Thank you for the confirmation that it can be done. Dean |

I would've thought it were possible. There are other small transfers/decals already out. Alban sells water-slide decals for British canteens in 28mm. I know, since it's me that makes them. Unfortunately that also means I know exactly how much swearing was involved, and just how many have marched, nay trickled, out of the door
. ;-) |

Dom: Oh, sorry, you did do those. Hey, a canteen is smaller than a sabretache Dean |
Doms Decals | 19 Jul 2010 6:37 a.m. PST |
Yeah, but at least different companies' canteens are all the same shape, unlike their sabretaches
. As above, I'll probably try a sheet or two whenever some Perry (and hopefully Victrix too at some point) cavalry find their way into the Skelton pile of unpainted figures, but depending on the specific design (of which there are hundreds, which is an obvious issue
.) they can be more than a little fiddly to actually get a usable printout. |

I did something that may be useful. This is the result: link And here is the file at 300 dpi: link Let me know. Aldo |

Aldo, That is fantastic – thank you, I will definately be using those for my perrys! How do you affix those to the sabretaches – do you use woodglue? Kind Regards, Sparker |

Aldo: Oooh, wow. I just got home & opened the link/file (couldn't do it at work). Amazing work! Very, very, useful. That looks perfect. Thank you very kindly for sharing, Dean |

Can we get a how-to guide on how to do this? It would be most useful. It may not be profitable as a business venture, but if individual wargamers can be trained on how to make their own, the hobby would be the better for it. |

Well, thank you! With a scanner I got the dimension of the sabretache, then I used Illustrator. Uniform references: Rousselot, Girbal, Funcken, La Sabretache Bulletin and all my (very) old documentation. Printed, cut and glued with woodglue. Here is another example: link Aldo |

Aldo – Spot on for the French. I've been trying to do the same thing for Austrian Hussars – but without the same excellent results. Are you working on any others? |
DeanMoto | 20 Jul 2010 6:14 a.m. PST |
Aldo: Your hussars are absolutely stunning. I must say your painting is excellent and enhanced even further by the perfectly done sabretaches. Dean |

Custor: at the moment I'm not doing anything similar. When I have something useful I will post to the TMP. |

Great work
Really, really good! I'm still knee deep in Austrians but French Hussars are always calling |

Come to think of it, I've made printed shabraques on paper. DB stuff from the hundred days. Crowned Ws in the corners – an architectural AutoCad program. I used putty and epoxy to make the half-fleece. I have a good picture, but I'm quite the luddite. Can somebody tell me how to post it? I guess I'd have to send it to somebody's web site. Email attachment? Bill |
