Prior to actually painting one, I have never noticed the open-faced frame thingummies on the glacis. They're obviously for storing something, but what ?

Yep – track section goes into the box, and a couple of retaining bars hold it in:

They're for 'grousers', which were attached to tracks for added traction in muddy and icy weather. You also see them hanging off the sides of M10s, though generally without the box.

Both Dom AND Mark are correct. Technically they are called grouser boxes. However, in practice the two longer boxes on the right of the picture Dom provided were seen carrying spare track while the smaller box on the left may or may not contain grousers.

It was also not uncommon to carry neither! I have photos that show, for example, a Jerry can stored in the left of the two long boxes as well as other pictures showing various bits and pieces of various sorts in the boxes.
