What sets of rules for the Franco-Prussian War are currently popular? |
Jovian1 | 06 Jul 2010 10:11 a.m. PST |
They Died for Glory was a set we used. I don't know what the latest and greatest is currently. They Died For Glory worked well for what they were and they did emphasize the relatively distinct differences between the two antagoists. |

A second vote for TDfG, we have played a few large games in 28mm. Currently looking at 1870 for 6mm games, Tally Ho! |

'To the Last Gaiter Button' are interesting, Square Bashing for the FPW and include a rather neat campaign. I wrote my own rules, but I would, wouldn't I:) |

Larry Brom's Chassepot and Needlegun (from sergeants3.com ) are used by the Jackson Gamers. They make for a medium sized 28mm game with a corps on each side. Maneuver units are infantry battalions of 18 (French) or 24 (German) figures, cavalry regiments of 24 figures, and artillery batteries of 3 guns and 6 gunner figures. Commanders are required for the regiment, brigade, division, and corps. You can see some battle reports here: link link They are also usable for 15mm since Larry included a set of scaled rulers. We played several games using a group member's 15mm armies: link link link Jim |

Some good sets mentioned. A lot depends on what level you want to play at. VnB is good for fighting multiple Corps. For a Corps per side I like Field of Battle. A new set allowing you to fight a few corps per side is being playtested for Field of Battle. Thanks, John |

Another vote for Field of Battle. |

As a thought, on a 12 x 6 table we managed 3 1/2 Prussian/Bavarian Corps vs a couple of French Corps on a 12 x 6 table, the scenareo made sure it was not just a case of loads of blokes in Blue advancing forwards to attack slightly less blokes in Blue, but in the end we had a good result: link Also in the album are my 6mm chaps, I am looking at playing with these on a 12 x 6 table to the 1870 rules for grand multi Corps/Army level games, Tally Ho! |

The answer depends a lot on what size unit the OP wants the maneuver elements to represent. Whether he wants to fight a tactical type of battle or a big battle in a reasonable amount of time is important too. |

My vote is for Chassepot and Needlegun for 28-mm FPW. But I've also run a FPW mini-campaign using 15-mm figures for They Died For Glory. It just depends what organizational level type and figure scale you want to play. |

John, that was a 2 day game, started with Cavalry Recce from both sides, and following some large, un FPW like! Cavalry scraps the hordes of Blue appeared! Tally Ho! |

following some large, un FPW like! Cavalry scraps Wasn't there a very large cavalry action towards the end of the battle at Mars-la-tour (as well as the more famous death ride)? Oh, and I'm for 'To the last gaiter button' |

We use 'Fire & Furia Francesa' rules too. One of our group wrote out a playsheet similar to the original Fire & Fury one. Easy to pick up even if you haven't played Fire & Fury before. The link provided by alincoln also contains a few Franco-Prussians scenarios to try. Ezza |

I have assorted sets
THey Died for Glory, Polemos FPW, To the Last Gaiter Button and Black Powder. TtLGB [as it shall now be known] is indeed quite a neat combination of campaign game and a rather Peter Pig-ish tabletop game. Not sure how practical it would be to combine the 2 in practice but a very nice set and lots of ideas in there. I'm not entirely convinced by Polemos and haven't actually played TDfG [as they shall now be known] but of them all I'd recommend Black Powder for a good straightfowrward game that you can ammend happily to your hearts content [I know you can do that with the others too but BP does seem to actively encourage this]. Last Hussar posted some interesting ideas for FPW scenarios on his blog which I've taken the liberty of linking to
link Very useful and interesting. |
