I think I should "know" this. I really thought I did "know" it. But
. Now I am looking around at some of the literature on Russian artillery and I have developed a question about the Russian horse artillery company in the reigns of Paul and Aleksandr. Was the organization : A) 6x 6-funt cannon + 6x 1/4-pud unicorns B) 8x 6-funt cannon + 4x 1/4-pud unicorns C) Both, but in different years D) Either, as it was not generally ordered or permanently fixed Comments : A) cannot be broken into two identical half-companies composed of battery pairs, and thus tends to break the spans-of-control for the junior officers B) can be broken into two identical half-companies composed of battery pairs, each 4x 6-funt cannon + 2x 1/4-pud unicorns – this is the orgianzation that I thought I "knew" was used C) if there was a change, when was it ? D) vaguely possible, but unlikely : the establishments carried 2x spare carriages and limbers of each type, sometimes equipped with a gun or unicorn – these could be used as a basis to re-configure a horse artillery company, for example before a campaign started Thanks in advance, - Igor |

I did not ever see the horse artillery work before (only the one for the Guard) Reading happily now. Thank you, dear friend! - Igor |

I find the discussion of the artillery experimentation under Paul I very interesting. As this was one of my very earliest Russian 'old' works read (ca 1962), I was quite suprised. Quite an eye opener for me. |

Dear Igor I was under the impression that Horse Artillery was A) 6x 6-funt cannon + 6x 1/4-pud unicorns Light Companies were when the Regimental Guns were removed from the Infantry in 1807. B) 8x 6-funt cannon + 4x 1/4-pud unicorns The Guard had only 8 pieces for some reason. Now this is what I have from the scraps of information at my disposal. Stephen |
