In the early nineties the late Dave Allsop produced some French and Austrian Napoleonic infantry,(apparently there were also some Russians which I've never seen). They were sold by Old Glory. Following his untimely death the lines were eventually withdrawn. I think OG then sold the moulds.
I'm interested to know what happened to these moulds and who now posesses them.
Anyone got any idea where they wound up?
(I will be contacting OG, but thought it might be slightly quicker to get an initial reply here).
cheers chris

Yes, you still might be able to get the Austrians and Russians from Old Glory. I read somewhere on TMP where a limited run was done for the Russians. The French were a Limited Edition with Part I Infantry in Shako and long gaiters and also Infantry with Bicorne. Part II was French light cavalry. They only made 500 boxes each of the French and I guess destroyed the molds.

but molds can be re-made IF the masters still exist.

If the masters were destroyed, then making new molds off of production figures is possible, BUT my understanding is, making molds from production figures results in each iteration of molds produces smaller figures than originally designed. So there would be "scale creep" downward.

The French were limited edition sets and you had to assemble the pieces, but they were really nice figures. The French light cavalry hussars and chasseurs were impossible to assemble and they were very brittle.

The Austrian infantry and the Russian infantry were one piece castings and much sturdier. The Austrians had the officers, musicians and several poses of infantry in helmets. The Russians were available in bicornes, 1805 shakoes and grenadier mitres and 1805 shakos with busch. There were no Russian officers, but I use the Elite 1805 musicians and officers to fill out the units and they work well together.

I believe that OG still has the molds and might run more if you approached them with a large order. Back in the 1990s a group of us put together an order for about 1200 Russians. I must have at least 600 of them myself that I will eventually put into big 60 man battalions for my 1:10 games.

BTW, both Austrian and Russian ranges are very nice. The Austrians remind me of the Sash and Sabre Austrians, which are also nice figures.

I had an e-mail from the very helpful Connie at OG this afternoon where she confirmed they did indeed still have the moulds and would be happy to cast some up, given sufficient quantity, so I'm just seeing if a few more folk are interested.

cheers chris

The Austrians in particular would fit in nicely with the project that you are currently working on. They also have German grenadiers and they might even have made Austrians in shako, which I forgot to mention earlier.

Hmm, I might be interested in more Austrians. I will try to post some pix of them on my blog over the weekend. I've posted pix of the Russians in the past.

Snowshoe03 Jul 2010 3:10 p.m. PST

I have a selection of the French figures and they are some of my favorites. I would be interested in more of these and a small number of Austrians. If you put an order together, I'm in for a box of each.

Chortle Fezian03 Jul 2010 7:02 p.m. PST

I've sent Connie a mail signaling my interest. I would buy quite a lot, to sell ready painted. Any pictures you chaps post would be gladly received :-)

Dave Allsop was a good friend and a talented sculptor.

Andy Maloney05 Jul 2010 11:44 a.m. PST

Hi Connie, I would also be very interested in a large order of the French 1809 figures if they are avalible.

Thanks,
Andy

15mm? 25mm? 28mm?

They would be 28mm figures, by today's standards.

I can't put in links to my blog from the office, but if you go to my blog at:

altefritz.blogspot.com

and search for october 27, 2010 and June 2, 2008 you can find pix of the painted Alsop Russian in the 1805 shako.

Those do look rather nice

Chortle Fezian18 Jul 2010 11:49 p.m. PST

Did anyone get a list of figures yet? I want to order. But I need to know the codes so I can order in useful proportions; so many flank company, so many sappers, etc.

christot19 Jul 2010 1:54 a.m. PST

No, Neil. OG indincated they didn't have a list.

Chortle Fezian19 Jul 2010 3:01 a.m. PST

Is there enough information to order? or do we just ask for x figures and sort them out when they arrive?

christot19 Jul 2010 3:24 a.m. PST

They said just ask for X no. fusileers, X no. officers, ex no. sappers etc etc and they will sort out the variants.

cheers chris

EagleSixFive19 Jul 2010 8:04 a.m. PST

er, um yes. October 27, 2009. (red faced from embarassment)

Clay the Elitist19 Jul 2010 11:06 a.m. PST

This doesn't include the French Chasseurs and Hussars, does it?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP19 Jul 2010 11:14 a.m. PST

They realy are quite nice, I don't understand why they don't get rid of the old OG, and just sell these and 2nd generation, when it comes to Russians

Andy Maloney18 Aug 2010 7:02 a.m. PST

Hi Chris,
Have you had any update from OG yet? I've contacted them a couple of times but have not heard back….

Thanks,
Andy

Chortle Fezian18 Aug 2010 9:58 p.m. PST

I got a message back from Russ on the 15th. Here are the figure details. Quite a large number of French would need to be ordered, as the molds will need to be remade. The Austrians and Russians are available now. The cavalry will not be available.

Austrians.
German inf in the following poses --marching, (Like a road march) attack marching, and advancing -- in helmets, shakos, and as grenadiers.
German commands for the above --- officers -4 poses I believe, std bearers, NCO's, and drummers.
There are some casualties and sappers also

Russians
R1 --advancing early shako
R2 -- grenadiers mitre hat
R3 -- bicorne
R4 -- shako with fat plume (grenadiers)
R5 -- line/grenadiers 1812 --just pop off the plume for line.
no command were made (Dave sadly passed away at this time)

French
The line comes with both shako and bicorne as the heads are seperate. There is advancing, charging, mattack march --complete with officers, NCO's, drummers, std bearers, sappers, wounded.

Andy Maloney19 Aug 2010 5:11 a.m. PST

Thanks for the update Chris! I will be in for a 3 battalion regiment of French @ 1/20 if any one from OG is watching this thread…

Neil: are you suggesting that Russ would be able to recast the Alsop French too? That would be fantastic. The French were excellent figures.

Chortle Fezian20 Aug 2010 8:50 p.m. PST

Hi Jim,

Russ has said that he could recast the French if demand was high enough. I don't know how many figures we would need to order. The old molds are dead, so new molds would need to be made. That will take some time. Of course nothing starts until the demand is there. I will get my order in during the next few days.

Cheers

Neil

ColonelToffeeApple18 Sep 2010 6:23 p.m. PST

I would be interested in getting some if this is still a live issue.

Andy Maloney22 Sep 2010 3:58 p.m. PST

My order of several hundred French infantry arrived today!! I can't say enough about how great these figures are, nothing else for me at least comes close and I've bought and painted Elite, Front Rank, Victrix, OG, Sash and Saber and Foundry.

I may have to order more!! Teresa, Connie and Russ were a big help along the way. Thanks OG team!!

JonFreitag06 Nov 2011 9:22 a.m. PST

Andy, would it be possible for you to provide a comparison photo of the Alsop French with the other manufacturers you have? I'm interested in the Alsop French too.
Thanks,
Jon

Clay the Elitist08 Nov 2011 1:15 p.m. PST

I have one of the 500 limited edition French Light Cavalry sets and I don't know if I like the idea of them being recast….

But I suppose it doesn't really matter. And I LOVE them…

MadBob27 Aug 2021 9:45 a.m. PST

Just saw this thread all these years later. I have a box (417/500) of the Allsop French I'm looking to sell. The box says over 260 French Infantry and 55 French light cavalry.
Im just waiting on whomever is in charge to process my premium account info so I can post them on the for sale board. But if any of you reading this are interested, shoot me a PM or email me redhand1@yahoo.com
