One day soon, man is going to be able to harness incredible energy -- maybe even the atom. Energy that could ultimately hurl men to other worlds in some sort of spaceship. And the men that reach out into space will find ways to feed the hungry millions of the world, and to cure their diseases. They'll be able to find a way to give each man hope and a common future. And those are the days worth living for….. (Edith Keeler, "The City on the Edge of Forever," stardate unknown.) <click> |

Barrage coming in was quite terrific. You could feel the whole ground shaking toward the coast. Soon they lifted the barrage farther inland. They sounded so big, and being poor bloody infantry, we had never been under naval fire before and these damn great shells came sailing over, such a size that you automatically ducked, even in the pillbox, as one went over, and my radio operator was standing next to me, very perturbed about this, and finally he said, 'blimey, sir, they're firing <click> |

off complaints about the dull romantic subplots. O'Brien in certainly not the perfect writer, given to stating rather than showing character development that occurs outside of his arena of strength: the dialogue between his two protagonists and their directly-connected internal monologues. However, reading his books is far more satisfying than watching the film adaptation of Forester's work. Here we are treated to the worn tale of the chosen one meeting his destiny, putting not a foot wrong on his way to greatness. The formula is of the antagonist-per-episode who either learns a lesson in three weeks that he failed to in all his long life, instructed of course by our poorly-sketched prodigy, or he dies. In either case, the reformed or dying cries melodramatically. Combined with the treatment of the audience as having no skills of interpretation, with all plot elements painfully explicated, the whole affair defies its rating by smacking of the family-friendly Saturday matinee, or worse, the patronising primary school educational movie, saving teachers from teaching and forcing students to write a tedious report. While O'Brien's captain benefits from being gifted with the tactical successes of dozens of historical… <click> |
