Hello TMP, I am wondering if anyone knows of a good campaign system to be used in the ancient period that would also be compatible with FoG. For example the campaign would run it's course either on a map or athe table and when two armies meet for a pitched battle one would deploy the armies on the table top and play out the battle using the FoG rules.

Let me know if such a system exists, thanks in advance.

Take a look at Empire here:

There are three free sets of campaign rules at bit.ly/cCLZVJ they are all based around DBMM but should be easily adapted to FOG.

I've been hoping for the same thing for years, myself.

Empire looks really interesting – I'll have to pick up a copy. For 5 pounds, it;s pretty much no risk. Thanks for the tip, Mike. The SPQR campaign rules also look interesting, particularly the us against the barbarians angle with all of the players being putatively on the same side. Thanks, Martin.

Another thing you might look into are the many modifications of the old Diplomacy game – I seem to recall several that were appropriate.

Another thing I keep hoping to find somewhere is a copy of "King of Kings" – the campaign set that went with the old map and counters "Ancients" games.

We have done sets using hex, point to point and area strategic movement. the rules were called Supreme Warlord and though initially for WRG back in the 1980s, it was revised later for DBA and any other rule set.

After using them all, the limited logistical movement of the era wqas best reflected by using the point to point system.

I myself am looking into doing the very same thing. I settled on using "Battlefinder" form the Perfect Captain site(its free)except drawing up my own cards for it. The cards will show only major geographic detail, such as rivers, roads, towns, etc. It will also be of a terrain type relevant to the defender(agricultural, urban, woodland, etc),so that you lay out the major detail on the card, and fill in the minor detail as per the rules and terrain type.

Doug, I am glad you got the emails with the campaign rules. All open OK! Let me know in an email if you have any questions.
