Obviously red, I prefer aged burgundy with aged cheddar.

Yes, it depends entirely on the locale and antagonists involved. Regionals can be quite nice.

Ambush Alley Games28 May 2010 10:27 a.m. PST

Wine? I prefer single malt whisky when I game!

Of course, I guess if I got pulled into one of those "wine and cheese" style games, a good glass of port or madeira would do me.

pinot nero friuli which is of course the correct wine for all occasions.

Condottiere28 May 2010 10:48 a.m. PST

Much depends on the setting. For example, if I were fighting an Italian Wars battle, the obvious choice for me would be a "nice Chianti."

Something Red, Dry, Full Bodied and some Fruit taste.

A nice Porto with cigar!

NWMike28 May 2010 11:11 a.m. PST

For ancients or fantasy – Mead.(preferably from a drinking horn)

For Naploeonics – Port, Sherry, or Madeira.(served by a sneering french waiter)

For 40K – Yukon Jack.

Cigars optional, but recommended. ;}

Vintage Ware's Warrior Port and Kinky Friedman Seanator cigars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a correct principle!

Of course, this might make gaming Mongols slightly less popular for those not into drinking fermented mare's milk.

Broadsword28 May 2010 12:06 p.m. PST

As they are all considered "games": red.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut28 May 2010 12:08 p.m. PST

The last time I drank wine with a wargame was during our groups abortive Flames of War effort, and I brought a nice bottle of Chianti (I was playing Italians) to celebrate Dark Age: Genesis going to the printers (I am not a sock puppet for Dark Age Games, I have never denied working for them!) Sadly, no one was in the mood for Chianti, and I wound up drinking the whole bottle myself… made rather a mess of the host's downstairs bathroom I'm afraid. But I have always been the source of the good stories: I am the guy who sowed up dressedi n drag, I drank the whole bottle of wine, I looked surprised that not everyon had seen beasty porn…

If you're playing ACW then Boonsfarm is the one.

Something served in a box with a pour spout! I'm all class. Should be on sale when I buy it with a 2 for 1 coupon.

ACW should be hard cider. "Apple jack is a friend of mine."

Co-op Fairtrade Argentine Bonarda Shiraz

I think Sancerre is wasted on gaming, might run to Chablis but most likely a cheap Chardonnay. Wolf Blass is OK.

We did once play Third Reich accompanied by a whole case of Beaujolais Nouveau, that was a memorable game, not.

Diet orange soda isn't technically a type a wine, is it?

Top Gun Ace28 May 2010 2:54 p.m. PST

No, that would be more of a champagne, or sparkling wine….

chaos0xomega28 May 2010 2:55 p.m. PST

Wine? NO!

Jaegermeister!

I'm going with great hall's porto and a cigar. Although, gotta admit, a nice little malbec could substitute for the port.

Playing AWI is either Madiera or Port…

OK GHG, where can we smoke and drink whilst we play? I'm game.

Giles at home28 May 2010 11:27 p.m. PST

There's a good shiraz from McLaren Vale in Oz called "Battle of Bosworth".

blacksmith29 May 2010 2:02 a.m. PST

Spanish red wines mainly from La Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Not those especifically made to be exported to anglo-saxon countries that taste like coloured water, but the ones made for locals.
Also, there are some really good white wines from the region where I live, Canary Islands, specially from Lanzarote.

Wg Cdr Luddite29 May 2010 10:00 a.m. PST

Pah! Wine is for the middle classes and pansy southerners.

Cask ale is a REAL man's drink.

Good for getting you dawghoused as well !

slugbalancer29 May 2010 4:03 p.m. PST

Almost any Rioja Gran Reserva. The only problem would be, the wife. She likes it as much as I do.

SECURITY MINISTER CRITTER30 May 2010 4:39 p.m. PST

So buy her an army and teach her to play!
Jeeze, do I have to do all the thinking around here???????

slugbalancer01 Jun 2010 7:38 a.m. PST

Two bottles of Rioja would be the better way around the problem. One for me at the table and one for her in front of the TV.

archstanton7301 Jun 2010 10:26 p.m. PST

BTW what is "Hard cider"??? Cider that has a flicknife???
