Does anyone have a suggestion as to which Humbrol colour/mixture to use for the Bundeswehr's 1960s-1980s standard camouflage colour of 'Gelboliv' (RAL 6014)?

All the websites I've found either suggest 75, which is WAY too dark, being the equivalent of British Bronze Green, or 155, which I find too drab/grey, being the equivalent of WW2 US Ollive Drab. I've tried all sorts of mixes, but nothing yet matches that weird yellowy-browny-green that was so familiar to me as a kid in the 1980s, seeing Bundeswehr vehicles every day (in Wales…).

Any suggestions?

Failing that, does anyone know what Vallejo colour might suffice?

Oops! I didn't intend to crosspost into Mediaeval Painting Guides! :o)

Wow… Humbrol enamels?? That's old skool for sure!

I just KNEW someone would say that…

Humbrols remain widely available in the UK and in a number of non-specialist shops local to me. Meanwhile, it's over 100 miles to my nearest wargames shop or pot of Vallejo. If I run out of paint, I can just pop down to the shops and buy another tin of Humbrol, without the faff of mail order. Simples.

Having used Humbrols for over 25 years, there is also the massive disincentive of having to 'learn' a whole new range of paints. I (generally) know exactly which Humbrol tin to use for which job and in what quantities – I can't be bothered to re-learn.

However, I will occasionally use acrylics for a colour that I just can't get in enamels.

Humbrol #46, NATO Olive says the man with a painted 1966 Bundeswehr unit.

EDIT: It would appear that Humbrol #46 NATO Olive Matt is no longer in production, but Revell seems to have the same name/same number.

I still have 4 tins of the Humbrol stuff, but I doubt that I could actually ship it.

Are you willing to use acrylics now? I have a bottle downstairs of custom-mixed Tamiya Gelboliv…

Damon.

Still mostly using Humbrol here too. The local stockist is 5 minutes walk from work.

Wyatt are you sure about that number? It seems to be Orange on this list! link

And a couple of other lists here link

102 Army Green (= Revell 45) or 117 US Light Green might be alternatives but they might not have a yellow enough tint to them. How about 159, nominally khaki drab but a greenish colour. I'll have a fossick in the paint drawers tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've been experimenting with 159+ a touch of white. I painted some Canadian Leopards (which were painted in the same colour at the German factory), but they look a little too green.

As it happens, I've just found the perfect colour! Humbrol 179… Only trouble is that I've only got one very lumpy tin of it and it was discontinued in the 90s… :o(

I'm now experimenting with 155 mixed with a little 159…

I mainly use Humbrol these days… only problem is the wife gives me a hard time over the smell.

I always found Tamiya acrylics (when I used such things) FAR smellier than enamels.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. After some experimentation, I've settled on a mix of 75 & 155, with a highlight of 155. I've painted up a few M48A2GA2s in this scheme and it looks spot on.

there is one company in the u.k that does code specific
paints in enamels . hannants do a range of their own paints
called xtracolor the code you need is x251

Wyatt, I think you mean to say Revell #46 Nato Oliv. True, it's well liked in the 1/35 community for RAL 6014

HistoryPhD02 Sep 2013 12:24 p.m. PST

I always use Model Masters Gelboliv. It's spot on the right shade!! It actually is RAL 6014

Who makes a spray paint version of Gelboliv, RAL 6014 I can buy in the US? I'll painting micro armour, so it's OK if it's a bit light.

Thanks.
