From what I understand Prussian Guns were black. What are some of the techniques you guys use to give the guns and metal on the carriage a little pop?
I was thinking about dry brushing gray and doing a little weathering with rust, but I would love to hear what you guys do.

who told you this nonsense?
Saxon guns had black wood work, Prussians had blue wood work.

As von Winterfeld says, Prussians guns were blue, quite a light blue. The metalwork may have been painted black.

I think he means the guns themselves, not the carriages.

If they're iron guns forget the 'rust' would be my advice. If they're brass, well…

AFAIK, the brass Prussian guns (barrels) were not painted.

Kolbe in an 1803 painting of Prussian horse artillery shows them in shining brass, as do Sachse and Eckert/Monten in the 1830s.

On the other hand, the iron fittings on the carriages and limbers were painted black.

If what is meant is the barrel, I always paint them brass/bronze. I like that.

The carriages, I painted a powder blue type color based on the research I performed at the time (20 years ago). I think I painted the metalwork black. Yes, it must have been black.

Here is where I got my info:

I have to admit, I am second guessing the color of the barrels. It states that they are black, but I to have seen a lot of prints where the barrel is brass/bronze. I'm thinking that I may keep them black just for a change of pace. All my other pieces are brass/bronze.
Alright gentlemen, back on topic. How can I make these black gun barrels pop?

von Winterfeldt15 May 2010 11:35 p.m. PST

the black gun barrels are wrong for field artillery

Look closely at your artwork. The top of the barrel is definately not black, I think the barrel came out looking darker than it should be. Poor printing, or a case of over-weathering, although bronze turns a blue-green if left to weather. Your barrel looks like it was intended to be bronze, not black.

However, if you insist on painting them incorrectly, try some dark shades of grey over the black.

Also look at all of the other color plates on that web site and what color are the gun tubes?

"Brass/Bronze"

Try these as well.

Rest easy lads, the gun tubes are a brass/bronze. I'm glad I went that direction. The contrast between the carriage and the tubes just looks better.

RUST?!?! Or for that matter, dull patches on brass ?!
The battery sergeant will have your … canister for breakfast!
