What scale are Game Workshops current Lord of the Rings Miniatures? Are there other compatible ranges? If so what are they? |

In my experience, closer to true 25mm rather than 28mm. They did not mix well with any of my OG, Crusader, etc figures. Closest I found was Ebob Rebellion. I gave both of these up because of the difficulty in matching – but that was 2-3 years ago. |

They are 25mm, truer proportions than heroic 28mm, however I find they mix well enough with the bigger figs. Perry, Gripping Beast and warlord are closest in proportions, But I've also used Artizan and Crusader to no ill effects. Even some Black Tree Renegade are too huge however |

Trouble is figures within GW's own range differ in size. Early plastics (rohan, mordor orcs, urak hai, warriors of minas tirith(sp)) are dwarfed by the newer metals while the newer plastics are also slightly smaller than the new metals. This is my problem with the range. Having said that they are all nice figures with very few exceptions (ahem
wood elves) and knowing GW they will probably be bringing out new sculpts for the original plastics at some point. |

The plastic figs are pretty much 25mm, but the metals are 28mm. |

Is GW mixing scales in the same game? |

The LotR miniatures are NO WHERE NEAR being True 25mm Have a look at some True 25mm miniatures (Namely, Citadel's and Ral Partha's Historical lines from the 1980s or Minifigs from the same or earlier time. These were miniatures that were measured with either 25mm from top of head to foot, or 25mm from bottom of foot to the eye (believe it or not, some of the Partha Historicals are larger than their Citadel counterparts). The LotR range is roughly 28mm to 32mm depending upon the figure in question, with most of the plastics coming in at almost exactly 28mm from foot to eye. The metals measure quite a bit larger (anywhere from 2mm to 6mm depending upon the figure). For instance, there was a rationale that the Dunedain of the North (which are easily 34mm to 36mm in height) were sculpted as such due to the great height of the Purer blood of the Northern Dunedain of Númenórean Descent (only, in reality, this would only amount to about 1mm to 3mm at most to reflect their great height)
Other times, it is just that GW makes no effort to police their talent pool, and often sculptors will not even take it upon themselves to make certain their work reflects the broader range for which they are sculpting. All said though, they are pretty good sculpts, and you will find that the vast majority of them (due to being from the same sculptors: The Perrys) are of the same size (and the Perry's ranges will mix fairly easily
I am using their HYW plastics to construct a unit of Archers from the Vale of Morthond (Blackroot Vale), as the parts mix well with both the Plastic Rangers and Númenóreans – which contain the other parts of the miniatures I am hacking. |

Is GW mixing scales in the same game? Officially not, but they just haven't done a very good job of scaling the plastic figs to the metal figs. In addition, there tends to be scale creep in the line. A lot of the later stuff is slightly larger than the early stuff. Not so much that it makes them incompatible. What Cog Comp says is pretty accurate, but the GW LOTR figs are in the scale that most people call "True 25mm". What most people call "heroic 28mm" is also much larger than 28mm. Even with all of the criticisms, the LOTR line is great. For the most part the sculpting is very good and there is a great variety of figures. I would still recommend it. I have some pics comparing the LOTR line to some other manufacturers here

Generally (which will get your specifically hung), the metal heros and specialty characters are larger than the plastic warriors. Some execptions to over-grown metal minis include the Rohan Royal Guard, some of the 2nd Age Men and Elves, Warg-riders, etc. This allows the heros to stand-out in the crowd, but can look a bit odd.
