What was the best military-class car of WWII? |
quidveritas | 28 Apr 2010 5:14 p.m. PST |
car??? Does the Jeep count? mjc |

Schwimmwagen, it's a car
it's a boat. Look it's schwimming. picture |
Top Gun Ace | 28 Apr 2010 5:23 p.m. PST |
Schwimmwagen gets my vote for flexibility, and swimming ability. The Jeep just looks on with envy, as does the Kubelwagen. |
jpattern2 | 28 Apr 2010 5:26 p.m. PST |
The Willys MB Jeep. Failing that, for sheer style, I'd go with Hitler's 6-wheeled Mercedes-Benz Typ.G4/W31 S.gl.Pkw Command Car: link picture Looks like more than 50 of them were made. |
aecurtis | 28 Apr 2010 5:36 p.m. PST |
Bill, it's got to be the FIAT "Torpedo" 508CM: TMP link What could be cooler than that?!?!? After all, FIATs are chick magnets: picture picture (OK, NSFW: nuthin' there I didn't see 55 years ago
) Allen |
Steve Hazuka | 28 Apr 2010 5:40 p.m. PST |
Allen that model in the second pic on the right is rather
revealing. She has a nice smile. |
jpattern2 | 28 Apr 2010 5:41 p.m. PST |
Guards! Arrest that woman! She's (obviously) out of uniform! |
Parzival | 28 Apr 2010 5:42 p.m. PST |
None of the above. Without a doubt, it's this one: picture Okay, so technically the car never saw service
but it's still the coolest car in WW2
I mean, heck, who wouldn't want one to drive around now? |
Keelhauled | 28 Apr 2010 5:54 p.m. PST |
I myself am partial to the DUKW |
Capt Carl | 28 Apr 2010 6:06 p.m. PST |
If the DUKW counts as a car, that gets my vote. Otherwise, the Volkswagon (Beetle) with a nifty SS camo scheme
. |
Frederick | 28 Apr 2010 6:19 p.m. PST |
The Willys Jeep gets my vote However, what about the good old Dodge Command Cars? link A bit high for recce roles, but a versatile, powerful command car |
McWong73 | 28 Apr 2010 6:44 p.m. PST |
M3 Scout Car/White Scout car. |
Kaoschallenged | 28 Apr 2010 7:03 p.m. PST |
The Jeep of course. Mobile and fast. It soldiered on for decades after the war with many countries. And was adapted, modified and updated for many jobs and service. Robert |
Condotta | 28 Apr 2010 7:11 p.m. PST |
Front wheel drive, thrifty use of petrol, car of choice of fighter pilots (maybe it was the suicide doors), smartly trimmed – yes, ladies and gentlemen, it's the French Citreon. picture |

Tommy20 | 28 Apr 2010 7:46 p.m. PST |
Gotta go with the jeep. However, if I could afford any "car" from the war, I'd buy a Daimler Dingo. There's something about the idea of tooling around in one of those that appeals to me. |
Leadpusher | 28 Apr 2010 8:38 p.m. PST |
It would have to be the jeep. All you needed to do was mount a 50 cal. machine gun and you could defeat the Afrika Korps by yourself. Each week no less. |
McWong73 | 28 Apr 2010 8:40 p.m. PST |
If I'm not mistaken in the last months of the war didn't the jeep kill more American officers than the Germans did? |
galvinm | 28 Apr 2010 9:15 p.m. PST |
Ah, I remember the good ol days, when I was issued my very own Jeep (I was a messenger/runner). Nowhere I could'nt go with that, and believe me I tried. Did roll it a couple of times, but I just got some help, pushed it back upright, and rolled on. What memories. |
galvinm | 28 Apr 2010 9:15 p.m. PST |
Oh, BTW, I vote for the Jeep (as if you did'nt know). |
(religious bigot) | 28 Apr 2010 10:39 p.m. PST |
One of: link I'd go for the 7+ litre V12. |
Martin Rapier | 29 Apr 2010 1:53 a.m. PST |
Puma? No seriously, Willys Jeep. |

Palafox | 29 Apr 2010 3:40 a.m. PST |
I'd choose the LRDG Chevrolets and Ford vehicles but technically these are more trucks than cars. |
Klebert L Hall | 29 Apr 2010 4:25 a.m. PST |
Jeep. Although I've always loved the Combat Car for it's weird door cutouts. -Kle. |
CooperSteveOnTheLaptop | 29 Apr 2010 4:54 a.m. PST |
Does the Kettengrad count as a car? |
Inari7 | 29 Apr 2010 5:09 a.m. PST |
The VW Bug stayed in production for what, about 50 years after the war. |
Jubilation T Cornpone | 29 Apr 2010 5:18 a.m. PST |
The Sahariana
.hands down. |
The G Dog | 29 Apr 2010 5:25 a.m. PST |

Palafox | 29 Apr 2010 7:05 a.m. PST |
If we can also choose armoured cars: Marmont Herrington Armoured car. Rolls Royce Armoured car. Love the looks of those old tin cans. |
Scorpio | 29 Apr 2010 7:41 a.m. PST |
|
Colonel Hairy Haggis | 29 Apr 2010 8:29 a.m. PST |
I owned a 1942 Ford GP (jeep). It was the first "car" I ever owned, and the most fun off road vehicle I EVER owned! I liked the "Bantam" too. As ever, Hairy |
Some Chicken | 29 Apr 2010 8:43 a.m. PST |
LRDG style 30cwt CMP Chevrolet. Practical, looks good and could shoot the out of most of the vehicles mentioned. |
Rod Robertson | 29 Apr 2010 9:24 a.m. PST |
Jeeps no matter which company made them under license. |
Cats Eyes | 29 Apr 2010 12:15 p.m. PST |
I'll go for Monty's Humber Snipe (Old Faithful). C E |
hurrahbro | 29 Apr 2010 12:31 p.m. PST |
Ladles and jeelyspoons, not practical but the coolest has to be the Czech Tatra T-87 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatra_T87 According to here and a few other sources is it its bit for the czech resistance too! link The Germans loved them, but their own staff banned their officers from driving and riding in them as it was killing so many officers (corners and huge V8 at the rear don't mix) and apparently that ruling was more observed in the breach than the observance. The Traction Avant however gets points for serious style. But the best, yes, I'd go for the ultra practical Jeep |
Peter Constantine | 29 Apr 2010 1:02 p.m. PST |
I'd second Palafox's vote for the Rolls Royce
looks like the car that put the 'bang' into Chitty Chitty Bang Bang picture |
donlowry | 29 Apr 2010 2:18 p.m. PST |
US generals had Cadillacs for staff cars (though, unfortunately, all the chrome etc. was painted flat OD). But, yeah, Jeeps were uber-cool. |

The VW Bug stayed in production for what, about 50 years after the war. Proving decisively that cheap is a quality all by itself. -Kle. |
BW1959 | 30 Apr 2010 8:45 a.m. PST |
Gotta be the jeep, and its still in production in Toledo, Ohio. |
skinkmasterreturns | 30 Apr 2010 12:23 p.m. PST |
Yeah, but its not the same version! That aside,I own a modern one,and it is a hell of a vehicle.Wouldnt have been able to get to work last February otherwise. |
archstanton73 | 30 Apr 2010 3:13 p.m. PST |
The best vehicle the Americans produced during the war bar none--The Jeep---Flexible, reliable served everywhere and did nearly everything
