I have a beautiful map of northern Italy circa 1700. It was done by a Dutch map maker for Eugene. I have eliminated extraneous information such as border and unit locations. I've colored all the waterways and road. What I want to do now is lock the jpg so no modifications can be done to the map. But I also want a layer to show troop locations and movement. I want this to be entirely independent of the base map. That is, I want to save it without it modifying the base map. Any suggestions?

OK, I'm flying blind re. Essentials, but in regular ol' Photoshop (CS2, PC version), you an go to the "Layers" panel (if you can't see it, hit F7 on a PC), select your base layer, and then near the top of the panel there's a bar just to left of the "Fill:" selection box. It allows you to lock: transparent pixels in layer, image pixels in layer, position, and all of the above. Does that answer your question?

You can't save multiple layers as a jpg. When doing similar stuff I save one complete map with all the layers in Photoshop's native format with appropriate layers locked and separately save jpg's for immediate use with appropriate layers visible or not (usually different layers showing on separate jpg's for each player).

What x42 said. Note also that whenever you save or re-save a jpeg it's resolution decreases slightly.

Everyone else is correct. Like Jeff, I'm not sure if PS Essentials supports layering as does the full product. If you need to upgrade your software, the layers function in Photoshop is very old (introduced about v. 3/4/5). You might save $ buying an obsolete version if this is all you need Photoshop for.

Photoshop Elements does support layers. Are you suggesting I save the map and the layer with the troop locations and movement in Photoshop format. Will this allow one to save both the map and the movement layer without combing the two?
