I know this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a discussion less than a year old so I'll see if there is any new info: Are there recommendations for a good/high quality "starter" paint set? I'm brand new to miniatures painting, so assume no preferences for stuff like white or black base, dry-brushing, washing, etc. (some of which I don't even understand as concepts – gotta learn). I do want good paints and good brushes, and am willing to pay for quality (though not just for the sake of paying more). For an idea of what color pallettes I'd be looking for, I'm all historical as far as gaming, with definite plans for a WWII naval fleet and also plans to start one of the following three armies: Samurai, Imperial Romans, or Early Crusaders. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks! --Isangeles |

Hello Isangeles: If you get in touch by e-mail or phone I can put together a good starter set for your specific interests. Obvious needs are black, white, flesh, brown, gold and silver but after that it depends on your project. Lots of horses or panzers? Roman shields or goblins? Coat D'Arms are excellent paint in fine bottles that keep good seals; I have a whole drawerful of them. However, I'd advise dropping in to your local hobby shop. Likely they will have 2-4 brands of paints to choose among, including at least one (probably small) starter set, plus you can pick up additional colors by eye. Further as a beginning painter you can probably get advice on painting and possibly even attend lessons, demonstrations, or group painting events. |

Thanks all, and Mark, I'll be getting an email to you soon with more details (and, I'm sure, more questions.) @donrice – Thanks for the idea, but unfortunately there really isn't a good hobby store near me – at least not one that I've been able to find, anyway. |

Simple. Buy seven good artists' acrylics: A greenish blue (phthalocyanine / cerulean) A purplish blue (french ultramarine) A purplish red (alizarin) An orangey red (cadmium red) An orangey yellow (cad yellow) A greenish yellow (lemon yellow) and a good strong white. From these you can get anything you like! |

If you are willing to spend your money, Foundry's sets (www.wargamesfoundry.com)are an attractive option. You have several to choose from depending on the period you are interested in. |
