The good thing about this is that Romans lose regardless. I've always wanted to see enough legions together to play this one out.

Cheers to everyone

Caliban,

Looks like a great scenario.

Any reason why Pompey's 1st legion isn't A grade? not arguing, just curious.

Thanks also for the rules. I don't have any 6mm but I am certainly going to check them out.

I also like the different scenarios you've provided. Nice bits of reading and wargame-daydreaming.

Hi Matt, I didn't define the 1st as A grade for several reasons, none of which is particularly compelling. First, although the troops in that particular legion seem to have performed well in the event, Pompey wasn't too keen on relying on them, or on anyone else for that matter. Second, the scenario is based on Simon MacDowall's, which conflates the various legions to give a good (and manageable!) game. Although I've followed Simon in calling it Legio I for flavour, it actually represents more than one legion.

Thirdly, and this is the clincher, I was really struggling to make the game balanced in terms of the points values. Originally I was going to make this particular legion veteran like the Spanish and Cilicians, but I really needed ways to reduce the Republicans' overall army count – hence other fudges like the pila and the nine cohorts.

So I suppose the short answer is that it's a game construct, and thanks a lot for looking and asking. I would really like to be able to play this one in 25mm, so I'm indulging in a bit of wargames daydreaming too!

Cheers and thanks again
Paul

25mm eh? Now you're talking.

I am still at work :) so I haven't checked over your rules set.

Could they be converted up to 25mm?

The club has scads of 25mm ancients crawling about.

The ruleset I have in mind is Tactica II, which is due for release very soon, but I have been trying to write the scenarios to be as generic as possible. I don't think our club would have enough Romans in 25mm to do this fight, though. Ultimately I'd love to be able to supply both sides myself. More daydreaming.

Cheers again

Paul

Paul,Tactica 11 soon? What decade? Mike Adams

Hi Mike, Arty has responded to queries just recently on the Tactica Yahoo Group. I think the rules may be imminent because some have expressed an interest in pre-orders and he says there's no need.

Here's hoping!
