A wargame hosted by Perry Gray and Eric Ritchie using Warfare in the Age of Reason rules at the recent Hotlead convention. link Most of the French right flank and all their centre held back while a portion of the right flank attempted to flank the British position through jungle. Meanwhile the French Indian allies on the left flank attacked the British directly in a redoubt and their Indian allies. Despite having poor quality troops (mainly Class 1 in AOR terms), a heavy cavalry unit aided by being led by its Prince and wearing armour against unarmoured opponents made much headway. When the armoured cavalry captured an opponent's standard, their morale was raised to Class 2 along with the tactical benefits of having an attached general and wearing armour. Encouraged by this, Indian cavalry and infantry (aided by elephant-dragged siege guns on a nearby hillock) gamely attacked the redoubt and despite being repulsed, returned to the fight more than once. The cavalry continued winning melees, removing support from the British in the redoubt where casualties eventually began to tell. Seeing this success, the French main line advanced with some units (like the green-coated French cavalry unit) fairing well enough to damage and then rout East India Company troops. Final attacks by the Indian troops and the French Indian Company troops finally cleared the redoubt, ending the game with a French (or their Indian allies' !) winning but at the cost of French commander Lally's life, killed late in the game in the centre. |

Thanks for posting your link, Andy! Looks and reads like a great game! I am especially impressed by the overall effect of the troops and terrain. With their consistent basing style, mighty elephant and bullock guns and impressive native and European standards they make an awesome sight en masse! |

2 things disturb me – First, I dont have my artillery on bullock wagons and, secondly I only have a French general on elephant, not a British one : ( Is that the Redoubt elephant the general is on? |
Cardinal Hawkwood | 09 Apr 2010 2:04 a.m. PST |
Yes I must say I thought.."Demaratos doesn't have any bullock wagon artillery"..hmmmm but I missed the Elephant borne General ..the game has a real air about it.(dusty). Andy..We will have to get Akula to send you a copy of the Pangaea-Golconda map when it is finished . He is working on it as we speak..I want to be the Imran-Khan of Hyperbad though the Raj of Punjabia has a bit going for it.. |

Interesting painting style. Do you use a wash to put the colors on? |
Cardinal Hawkwood | 09 Apr 2010 4:51 a.m. PST |
D..I prefer the comfort of a chair and a desk
. boom boom!!(Andy will like this ) AndyG can you post a link to this you know where please? |
andygamer | 09 Apr 2010 5:03 a.m. PST |
None of the figures are mine, Dale, I was just an observer so I don't know anything about the painting techniques etc. used. Maybe one of the game masters will see this TMP post and further comment on the game and answer any figure or painting questions. And as I remarked at the time, Demaratos, better to die gloriously on the field than have the French revolutionaries guillotine you. BTW, there will be a new advertiser in the Mercurius Pangaeae soon re. the Galcondan sub-continent. |

Yes, Cardinal, I thought I'd post a link to it there too. I was even toying with promoting it as an Alban-Melchester duel between trading company forces, but I decided I shouldn't screw with the campaign's narrative by interjecting a battle in the campaign--even a meaningless one--on the campaigners running those countries. And I couldn't remember if you guys were using French as stand-ins for the Albans, so didn't want to use unhistorical forces for the Albans--just think of the beating I'd take for that here at TMP. ;^) P.S. Good one, Cardinal. |

Thanks Andy! That's a lot of pictures! |

@Dale: I think that that is Eric's painting style, which I recognize from games in Montreal from long ago. If I recall correctly, he undercoats with white, and then uses a wet brush (with acrylic paints) such that they are, effectively, washes. That style allows for very productive painting, leaving more time for terrain building, gaming, household projects, and other activities

Cardinal, Did you see the unit with blue gaiters? Mine are not the only ones! |
Demaratos | 10 Apr 2010 8:29 p.m. PST |
Andy, Do you have contact details for the guys who ran it? |
andygamer | 10 Apr 2010 10:08 p.m. PST |
Not me, Demaratos, but Jamesonsafari will have that information. It's roundabout, but perhaps contact James through Bill of TMP or give James your email address here in the comments and he can pass on your address to the GMs and they can contact you if they're so inclined? Or James can point out this TMP thread to them and you can question them and have them reply in the comments here? |

Apparently, this game is now scheduled to be run at CanGames in Ottawa, which is taking place on the weekend of May 22nd and 23rd. The game itself is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m.: PDF link cangames.ca |

I played in the game (I had the centre of the British side). It was great fun, with a rambunctious group of players. The figures were just marvellous, as you can see. Kudos to Eric and Perry, and to my victorious opponents. |

Nice pictures. There are some French sepoys in 'flat' turbans. Do you know what make these are? Thanks |

Unfortunately, I don't know, Duc. Maybe someone here can identify them? |

Duc de Brouilly | 16 May 2010 2:07 p.m. PST |
Parkfield do seem to be one of the few companies to make sepoys with this type of headdress but I don't think the ones in the photos are by them. And Parkfield are a little bit on the small side compared to the other SYW figures I have. Thanks for the suggestion all the same. |
