It probably seems awfully lazy, but I'm not much into painting tiny numbers. Anyone know where I can buy sheets of numbers in white that are the right size for 1:2400? Time period is 1942 Guadalcanal campaign. |

The wartime numbers were so small that they probably would be illegible in 1/2400. |

.a couple of dots the size of a pinprick is all they would be in WW2. |

Mal and Shaggy are absolutely right. USN hull numbers were greatly reduced in size during WWII. Not until after the war were the hull numbers restored again to their prewar style. Here are some visual examples of how the wartime destroyers' hull numbers appeared: link picture picture picture picture Mal has a great idea with the dots representing hull numbers, but as a suggestion, what about legible numbers on your ships' bases?
