Bizzbum | 14 Apr 2010 9:57 a.m. PST |
We always use the Empire rules since it is required by copyright that if we use the old Empire nappy figures we must use their respective rules. Otherwise, the Empire figures seem to rout off the table leaving only the Battle Honor and Old Glory figures. Some type of union thing

They probably aren't French if they rout during an Empire game. (oh, I said it!) |

In reading about my 7-inch square Malplaquet project I've come across the idea of Jonathan Swift using satire to bring down the mighty Duke of Marlborough, by a stream of scurrilous pamphlets. Amongst his writings was Gulliver's Travels with the giants and Lilliputians, as well if you look into it a number of other sizes and shapes of peoples. This is as appropriate a place as there will ever be to announce the Open License Telescopic Space Concept, or OLTSC. In full disclosure it was years ago described by C.F. Wesencraft, in an earlier and more limited form. He described the perspective difference between being up on a horse, up in a church tower, up on a hill, up in a helicopter, and up in an aircraft at 60,000 feet, and the difference that these viewpoints would have upon the commanders' view of the scene. IIRC, he described it as the grand manner in his chapter, and since he personally liked multipliers of 8, his figures were able to change from 1:32 to 1:128 or 1:256 as desired. Unfortunately a member of the 12th South Carolina borrowed my copy in August, 1976 at the Rockford re-enactment, and has not yet returned it, so I can't be 100% sure IIRC. A very similar effect to what he described in 1974 can be readily seen by using Goggle earth or maps or other such applications, as with a computer click the distance up can be readily changed, the ground area appears larger or smaller. In my rules I have been experimenting with on the field perspective with larger figures to the front and smaller figures to the rear, ultimately after the greyscale painted 2mm, too far away to distinguish uniform details, disapppear in a puff of the color of cotton ball Napoleon recognized as a troop movement. Before anyone else grabs it up, and seeing that the grand manner name has been successfully reappropriated for an equal and opposite use elsewhere, the Open License Telescopic Space Concept is released to the wargaming public and aspiring amateur rules writer for use as desired. Mention and thanks ought here also be made of the -ic idea suggested by Royal Marine, but here changed to a slightly different usage. |

..The 7inch square Malplaquet just sounds like an excuse for not painting detail!!!!!!! (Joke!!)--Sounds cool though--The sort of grand wargame you can play on a train!!! Also remember in the opposite direction there are also fractals--the closer you get the patterns of nature repeat themselves to infinity

@arch Yes, that's a major benefit. At the scale for that game the troops would have to be greyed out only a few inches away, due to visibility, so only need to be primed and not painted, until they get closer. And in that scale not only can you paint them when they move within engagement distance, but can also repaint eliminated elements, because it dries quickly. I tried to find a funny picture that deepfriedhappymice has of something very close to my game, but could not find it in there now. If it was on a train, at that scale the back of the same car would be Paris, so you have the context of the whole campaign of which the battle really is a small but important part. I was thinking of having it at work, originally. MC LeSingeDew, the thread is to announce that on a site linked to at page 1, you can for a certain price get PDF copies of Empire, and some other games. Then the OP made a few comments people found off-putting and poorly calculated to sell something, and it became a bash Empire fest. And although I cannot in good conscience join their site, it is only because I cannot play the game without changing it, so I don't fit the profile they want. That only applies to me. If you are the type of wargamer who wants to know about different rules, and how they work, I would not hesitate to recommend Empire as an important set which was a big hit especially in the eighties but still known and somewhat popular today. But everybody is not that type person. In this thread many people rip on different aspects, including me on a couple, but I did not throw away my copy, I just regret a couple things about it. So I change it. As to the OP, perhaps he has been punished enough for his gaffes from page 1, but I would not be surprised if this thread did not help sales and hits, for them, and I know at least a membership or two after all. Listen to these guys, but don't listen to these guys, if you're curious go for it. I will probably check out LoG myself due to what I read here. When I bought Empire I was only making five bucks an hour minus tax and he had them at 25 or 30 bucks even then. So.. |

And @doc Sorry to add on, but the reference to the "fortified bog houses" is on page 80, at the end of Chapter 4, in Duffy's Fire and Stone. |
