I was wondering if the Scott Bowden thread was going to bring this back from the dead. I'm sad about him being tied up with Pitts (who, by the way, is trashing yet ANOTHER gaming convention – Texicon). I recently bought Bowden's book The Glory Years. I have always enjoyed his work. He seems to write about what I want to read
.. Now if he just knew what a pariah Pitts is

I've chosen to
just get the product, which will come in handy now and again, when we dust off Empire (I have I thru III and the campaign system, never got a good look at V, now I will). I just love being able to buy Empire V on line. Click.Click.Click.Bye. Not interested in comments made by minions or merchants online, or anyones past behavior or present posturing. Have access to the Author's direct thread on the site included with the purchase if a question comes up. Bowden's input to the hobby has been substantial over the years and personally useful to me. I hardly ever actually use paper rules anymore, but this is a good addition to the rules library! |

..Any help on poitning out how I purchase Empire V or download the soon to be free old edition set, would be greatly appreciated. |

This thread alone is a good reason for Bill to look at getting some new forum software
one that allows you to either LOCK or delete entire threads. Let's see here
Stake it to the ground, kick a brick into the teeth so it can't bite, rig a sickle so that it will behead itself if it tries to rise anyway, draw and quarter it, burn the remains in separate piles, and bury at a crossroads. I think we're covered. |

Raises an interesting question – whats the future of the ruleset then ? At least the War Event was extending the commercial life of the rules buy offering PDFs for sale. They have taken that facility down, and it looks like the Empire forum at the War Event is gone too. :( The yahoo group remains very active, so there is still a lot of interest in these very cool sets of rules. There is still purchase demand there for the rules, and yet you cannot buy them anymore. Just how hard is it to setup a site to sell a PDF, and convert real customer demand into a cashflow ? Its not rocket science. I think it would be a tragic loss to see the rules fade away due to being impossible to purchase, or otherwise access. They are an important part of wargaming history. Im sure it was NOT the intention of the Authors of those rules to see them killed off due to restricted access. There are plenty of decent sites and companies out there that offer online sales of PDF versions of wargame rules, that have excellent promotion and exposure. Even the original and historically important Kriegspiel rules from 1824 are available in this fashion. So why not just negotiate a simple deal with one of these reputable companies to continue providing access to the system via a PDF download ? If that causes too many political problems – then just open them up and allow them to proliferate under a creative commons license – let the internet worry about the distribution problems. A lot of options there. The worst possible option (for the authors and holders of the copyrights) would be to simply say "too hard – you cant have them anymore". I dont believe that was the author's intentions. Such a strategy would not work anyway
.. we are well into the 21st century already, and the internet has its own way of bypassing politics like this, and routing around problems of access to information. If people want access to information (like music, PDFs, software
or rulesets) that is not available by any other reasonable means
then the information will inevitably find its way on to the anonymous mass of shared torrents that are always in circulation for those that seek them. Once that happens, then the opportunity to exploit a commercial demand has been forfeited. Fighting (or legislating) against that reality is futile. |

No way I'm going to read this whole thread but just want to agree with Steve64's last post. "I think it would be a tragic loss to see the rules fade away due to being impossible to purchase, or otherwise access. They are an important part of wargaming history. Im sure it was NOT the intention of the Authors of those rules to see them killed off due to restricted access." It most certainly would. Lot of people love these rules and it would be nice to see them stay available. Now, if you'll excuse me I'm off to put my copy of Empire V into protective plastic sleeves for durability.. |

Hey pessa00, All my rules are in protective plastic sleeves and Empire V has been for a decade and a half. A word of warning. Maybe there's better products out there but use paper envelopes to store the counters. I tried the resealable plastic protective pouches that fit in notebooks and oddly enough they seem to produce a bit of a greasy substance over time that is somewhat worrying. Hate to see these wonderful rule books damaged. Mark |

We've played at NOVAG both sets. We usually played with several corps per side. The big problem was getting on the table before the game was half over. Other players I've met of the rules had a ball with them and were obviously very experienced at playing them. So I'm wondering if the learning curve is really worth it or just find another set of Nappy/Civil War to play? Have to say the concept was often attractive-playing a big battle in some kind of reasonable time, yet often out of reach. |

I see Empire and Stars and Bars all the time at HMGS cons. I saw a boxed Empire V yesterday at Historicon in the afternoon flea market. I should buy these and mark them up. Thanks guys. |

I will put in a plug here for Mark Twain's "historical" novel about Joan of Arc. That's my favorite version of the story. It was his favorite work and he took twelve years on it, running the manuscript under his wife's critical eye. I have only seen snatches of the Mila movie, and it seems excellent, so I bought the DVD (yet to view it). The Ingrid Bergman portrayal is excellent. But if you want to get into the spirit of this story, I recommend the silent film, "The Passion of Joan of Arc" (Criterion edition). Watch it with Richard Einhorn's "movie score" going. My belief about what Joan of Arc was is that she was inspired not insane. Arguably they are the same thing, or the one can lead to the other. True inspiration can make a mind insane. It won't rest until the vision is complete. Failure to accomplish the vision will bring on madness. There was nothing irrational about following the commands of a girl in plate armor who was a winner. Everybody back then believed in angels and demons. Depending on which side you were on, Joan was listening to one or the other………….. |

Cool ! :o) Just to join in the random thread. Actually, I liked the Luc Besson version, the way it portrayed the English Nobles/Knights was hilarious (in a good way) and the fights were good too! Malkovich, Hoffman and Faye Dunaway had good supporting roles and nobody had the wrong envelope! I think Mila Jovovich and Besson were still married at the time or maybe just about to split up. They did the Fifth Element together as well. |
