Unarmed, or poorly armed government troops, captains and helmsmen who can't steer a proper course, corruption, graft, vessels just waiting to be plundered, etc. What's not to love, at least from a pirate's point of view: link Reminds me a bit of the Carribean during the heyday of the pirate scourge a few centuries ago. Many ports had gun batteries, or even forts, but they quickly fell into disrepair, and were undergunned, or unmanned much of the time. I read one account of a few Spanish vessels being chased off from an invasion by a battery of guns (might have been even a single gun fired in anger). Apparently, they had one more cannonball to fire at their would-be assailants, and would then be out of ammo. Lucky for them, the attackers failed their morale check. |

Apparently, false bravado can sometimes be effective, especially against poorly disciplined foes. |

"What do they intend to do? Shout "Bang, bang" at the pirates?" Awesome! I definitely need some opponents for my Somalis. Steve Cavalcade Wargames cavalcadewargames.com |

This also ties in vary nicely with an article from last year (don't remember where I saw it, but the link was either from here or Baen's Bar) showing some of the Nigerian delta pirates (IIRC) with a machinegun--an MG42 or MG3--which was missing it's barrel. VERY intimidating. Not. So, rusted bolt vs. no barrel--fair fight, says I! Rob |

Not all commercial ventures are poorly armed. I know a fellow on an oil survey vessel off the coast of Mozambique, just south of Somalia. They have armed guards on board and two gunboats for protection. |

These guys had gunboats too, but their ammo is rusty/corroded, so may not work when needed, and their remote gun on the foredeck is u/s too. Apparently, it is just for show. Granted, machetes and knives can be pretty deadly in close quarters combat, but things may not be as good as they appear. Then again, perhaps the people hiring them like it that way, in case the enemy tries to, or does buy them off. Better to have guards/militia with weapons that don't work, than well armed traitors in their midst. |

"Unarmed, or poorly armed government troops, captains and helmsmen who can't steer a proper course, corruption, graft, vessels just waiting to be plundered, etc. What's not to love, at least from a pirate's point of view:" Are these the African gunboats etc that you're referring to, or the Pirates' victims? |
