Mike of Rebel Minis and John Bear Ross have provided my game table with a few more outstanding models. Rebel Minis just recently released the Mk.I HAMR Battle suits as a new addition to their growing line of 15mm SciFi minis. Now, while Mike has a lot of options planned for these suits, the current variety comes standard with a rifle and large combat blade. I thought about changing the weapons a little and decided to play with the next batch and leave these as they come. I did a couple slight mods to the minis, reversing the knife on one and adding a little torso twist to the other (make sure that the legs are going in the right direction before gluing, painting, taking pictures of and posting them to the internet – yes, I made that mistake).

Since I have more desert and dry terrain than anything else I went with a Arid lands camo pattern. The contrast between colors was much greater before I inked the minis, but I still like the overall effect. I had to place some rather bright buildings behind them for taking the pictures since the suits blind in rather well with much of my terrain. I was not sure what I wanted to do with the cockpit until the very last moment. I originally planned to camo the entire mini, but then decided that took a lot away from John's design and did not show off the details very well. In the end, the green was a compromise to the fact I wanted the mini to have the glass show up, but not take completely away from having the rest of the armor in camo. I was not a big fan of the knives, but after painting the minis, they've grown on me and I am much happier with them now. I do admit that the giant skull on the knife I flipped is a little much since the skull is as big as most 15mm soldiers, but what the heck, if I get to use a knife that big, who is going to comment on the decorations! Overall, I really liked the HAMRs and am waiting for the additional options and the Titan Marine version!!!!

Later this week, I will try and post some comparison pictures to other mini lines (Critical Mass, GZG, Old Crow, 1/87 Heavy Gear etc.) so if there is something you want included, please let me know.

Important production note: You may notice a little bit of texture on the minis that relate back to the 3D printing. These particular minis were from a test run and on the production version this has been corrected.

Terrain: Buildings and hills are all mine and the mat is from TheTerrainGuy theterrainguy.com

Very nice, indeed.

So the newer Hammer models don't show the layers deposited by the 3D printer?

Right. you can see the difference on the picture Mike added to the website for scale. Link: link

I would not have mentioned it, but it shows up in a few spots and I did not want anyone to get the wrong impression. I really did not mind the lines, but other might, so I thought I would point out they have been changed on the new castings.

Nixe work, Jeff. What game are you playing them with?

John Bear Ross28 Mar 2010 11:43 p.m. PST

It is not often that I squeal like a little girl. You, sir, have made me do so. Those are great. I'll make a blog entry linking to your gallery, if you don't mind.

Best,
JBR

Impala – What game are you playing them with?

What? These are supposed to be used in a game??? :)

When and if I can ever find some time to actually get to play a game, they will be used for Tomorrow War from Ambush Alley Games (out a little later this year and based on the Force on Force Rules) or if I want more detail, I may try No Limits or a modified version of Vor. I have most rules systems available, so I have lost to pick from, the important issue is trying to find the time to play. I think CloudCaptain is going to forcibly make me play something with him one of these days . . . .

John, I am glad you like them and hope no one heard you squealing since that could be awkward. I do not mind you linking the gallery. Same thing I told Mike, you can use any of the pictures you like.

Blog entry is up. The wife did look over from her book at me strangely. Ah, how she indulges me, so.

Great Job! What are the troopers (grey and tan) pictured acompanying the armor?

The troopers are Titan Marines from Rebel Minis. Mike of Rebel hasstated they will have more troops for the line in the not too distant future. These are some pant schemes I experimented with from the original pack of troops.

Is that the drylands mat from the terrain guy? Add are those static grass tufts Silfor prairie tufts? If so, what colors? late summer and autumn?

JRacel29 Mar 2010 8:57 a.m. PST

@The Epic Gamer,

The Tufts are Silfor Prarie Tufts and the colors are Summer and Autumn.

The mat is a custom version of the standard Desert mat with some greens added into it to make it have a little more "life" as well as making it useful for a wider variety of terrains and climates. I just had Allen (theterrainguy) do a smaller version of the same mat for me, so I am sure if you want one, all you need do is reference me and the fact you want the same type of mat. He is a great guy to work with if you have something special you want. I just got a very large box of terrain from him today.

I have a dryland and urban mat from Allen, they're very good. I was just curious as I wanted to see how those tufts matched up with the coloring. I've been thinking of using them on some bases. Thanks!

I just heard from the casters and I should have the Titan HAMRs in this week! Now to get Jeff to paint them…… :)

You have a specific color in mind?

Hey Jeff,

How about telling us how you went about painting these suckers up. What paint was used and what was the order and so on. They look fantastic. Really makes me want to pick these up now.

JRacel30 Mar 2010 9:20 a.m. PST

MiniatureReview,

I will see if I have the time. I managed to cut my left index finger pretty good last night, so typing is a little challenging right now. I'll let you know if I can do it. Are you wanting the data posted here or do you need something for your webpage?

Jeff

MiniatureReview30 Mar 2010 1:28 p.m. PST

Well now that your asking. I would love a little write for both. I will surely post it on my website. I used your last painting scheme to paint up some of those Rebel Minis Scourge. I quite liked the color scheme.

And now for a fun video.

Cheers

ordinarybass30 Mar 2010 1:43 p.m. PST

Thanks for the link Jeff,

I'd never taken a close look at the Rebel Mini sci-fi. The lines didn't seem like much at first glance, but once you expand the pics it's quite an impressive range of figs.

That website should definitely invest in a few more medium size 1-2 figure shots for thier online shop.

JRacel30 Mar 2010 2:57 p.m. PST

ordinarybass,

I am glad you liked the pictures and that they got you to take a look at the Rebel Line. I'm sure Mike will appreciate the feedback on the website and I agree that more pictures are always a plus, but at least Mike has his pictures of the entire line on his site, something not all retails can say! grin

So, lets say Mike can't add a lot more pictures, but could maybe make some of the ones shown a little bigger without having to expand them, would that help? Also, would it be useful to add a page of links to where other people have painted examples of Rebel products (biggest hazard of this is a getting permission and two making sure the links stay active as people move or take down pictures). I'm sure suggestions would not hurt if you have them.

Jeff
