So here is a sneak peak of the Midway Battle Game. Each side will have a Battle Board: picture The Battle Boards have magnetic counters which allow the players to move their fleets and aircraft in secret: picture Ships that are spotted are put on the table: picture I made special bases for the ships to help identify the miniatures. The basic rules for combat will be based on the Axis and Allies Naval game. However players will move their ships secretly, and send out air patrols to spot the enemy fleet. The Battle Boards will pivot toward the GM between movement phases. The GM will call out the sightings of enemy fleet elements. Players will place them on the board, and engage in combat. We have been through a couple of play tests, but the full game will be rolled out at Battle Fields Next Saturday. If it works we I will post some after action reports, and the rules modifications I am using

Very impressive – love the bases. How did you make them? |

Ok, Now I have to get there. Oh please don't let there be any OT this Saturday! Looks very nice. It's similar to an idea I want to try using some clear acetate sheets and a map for plotting "campaign" movement of both sides and then have a master GM sheet for detection and combat effects. I've got to see this in person. Good work sir. |

Tom, I am hoping to tempt some people to come and play. I need Guinea Pigs :) We have done a couple of dry runs on adapting the rules. It looks like it will work without modification to the base rules or unit cards. Oh, and using photo shop, I made cards for the ships I did not really have, i.e. the Hiryu, Kaga
.. Lucius, actually the bases were easy. I made them with PowerPoint, then printed them on old fashioned transparencies (I had some laying around as relics). I also use some GF9 bases, but they do not offer enough yet. Plus I can customize these to the ships I need. The boards are laminated so players should be able to make notes with a Vis-a-Vis marker. Also, subs do not ever get placed on the board unless they encounter an ASW capable enemy unit. Glad you guys like it. I hope the convention players enjoy it. |

Sounds like you have the making of a great con game! I look forward to reading an after action report. |

Did the vis-a-vis markers solve the bleed problem on the acetate? I did not think that dry-erase would leave a stain, but it did. |

Yup, seems to work better. |

Two last questions: Are all the ships Axis and Allies? Did you get an aftermarket decal for the carrier decks? |
Dervel | 22 Mar 2010 12:21 p.m. PST |
All Axis and Allies. No aftermarket decals. |
