Does anybody know who, in the British army, is allowed to carry a swagger stick? I have a swagger stick from my fathers service in the Royal Engineers during WW2 and was surprised as I always thought they were used by officers and senior NCOs only. My father was a sapper. Does anybody know what the rules for these are? John |

No idea about the current status, but the book "Khaki Drill and Jungle Green" indicates that in the interwar-period short walking-out canes could be carried by all ranks when off-duty. There is also mention that they could be decorated with regimental crests. This is different item from the longer pace stick, which was a service item used by drill instructors both as a measurement device and unofficial status indicator. |

OR's were allowed to carry them in Walking Out Dress. Not sure how common they were in WWII, but they show up frequently in studio PPCs from the Great War. I have a few swagger sticks in my collection and, while you don't run into them every day, they aren't exceedingly rare (certain Regiments being the exception). I assume your father's has the Corps' badge on the thimble top? |

Enfant Perdus: Stick is about 2 feet long, appears to be painted or stained black, tipped in what looks like silver at both ends with as you suggested the royal engineers crest on the top. Greifbringer: Does your comment mean there was a swagger stick and a walking out cane, or are they the same thing? Thanks for your help. John |
