I already have the Master and Commander sound track, and a couple of Beethoven pieces. What other period music would be good for this?

I am not sure what you want.
Music to listen to when you rig a ship or music that conjurs up images of rigging ships..?

Music specific to the French Revolution/ Napoleonic era, or music that invokes images of sailing the raging main. Or… music that's calm and soothing, so I don't harm myself or others when I inevitably screw up the rigging job!

Well… to me Mars by Holst sounds like a massive ship engaging lesser vessels in a battle.
For the first part of the score the MASSIVE ship is hinted at and not seen until later on.

hmmmmm must dig that out now.

The soundtrack to Hornblower would probably suit you:

Very good indeed, PC! There are three in the series, so I might have to invest in one or two of them, sure.

I would recommend the sound track from "The Seahawks" (1938) and the "The Pirates of the Caribbean" series.

Look up the "Minstrels of Mayhem", many of their tunes on their albums are old sailing song's or similar.

There is also the sound track from "Victory at Sea".

For something a bit different, an old Horatio Hornblower radio show is available. Quality of the surviving recordings can be hit or miss, and I wouldn't say it was a great radio show in any case, more of an ok one. But it's cheap, here's where I got mine:

There's also a Scarlet Pimpernel series available, but I haven't been able to get into it – about as predictable as an episode of Gilligan's Island (you know, the one where they almost got off the island…).

I have a fair number of the old radio shows, and have them on as much as music. Comedies aren't good for painting to, though.

A few i recommend

The score to the John Addams Miniseries
The score to Cutthroat Island
Yo yo ma's Bach cello recordings

I build Napoleonic ships to Patrick Tull's absolutely fantastic audio book recordings of the Patrick O'Brian Master and commander series (available at borders books or thru audibles online)Nothing makes the hours go by smoother then the combination of great literature, great voice work, and seeing a ship come into focus as you work!
