ALright, I've read all the threads. I'm looking at buying a few cars. I haunted all the second hand shops around down. All I found was a matchbox – looked good at the time got it home it's too big. Someone suggested that Matchbox yesteryear were good cars, slightly small but passable. A quick search of E-bay resulted in 8 pages of cars. I don't really want to repaint. Are these good cars?

Also try diecast direct. They have some nice pulp era cars and trucks, and the prices aren't too bad. And you really wouldn't need to repaint them.

The Matchbox Yesteryear range are generally a pretty good fit for 28mm figures. As they were sized to fit the box rather than any specific scale you've got to watch what you're getting, however.
Things like saloon cars tend be larger scales (1/43ish) whilst bigger vehicles can be nearer to 20mm figures in size.
I've got several of the Crossley Tender which fit nicely with my VBCW army and my leader figure "the Duke" has a massive American limo which is a bit over-scale really but looks the part to fit him, his butler, chauffeur and secretary in.

Matchbox Models of Yesteryear and Lledo are the ones I have found that match up best. Just make sure you get the size on the MoY, they made a larger scale set as well.

You can see how a couple of trucks scale in the images in this thread.

What about Blue Moon's Highways and Byways range? Very nice and they are made for 28mm. You will have to assemble and paint but they are not difficult to do.

Thanks for your help. It seems like matchbox and liedo are the way to go.

Who makes nice Atomic Era cars in that scale… stuff with fins and Dagmar bumpers?

I am still searching for the right cars for the 50s and such. I may go with the pricier and slightly larger Solido. Some of the German modelers prefer their cars to be slightly smaller and so they go with matchbox.

Those Solido cars are nice… some are not so badly priced.

I've been building up various Heller 1/43 kits… but most of those are modern cars and trucks. I wish they made old Cadillacs and Galaxys.

Lledo cars are my choice

Here is a comparison of scales:

Here's my collection:

also note that their "Big Rigs" are a different scale than the cars and smaller trucks

That's a nice collection. That bluebird would totally get converted into a hero or villain's car.

I only wish they had done a Phantom Corsair

Disney "Cars" are 1:50, cheap, and look good if you paint out the eyes. Browsing the toy aisle at Walmart or Target I've picked up

Lizzie; model T. Doc Hudson; early 50's Hudson Flo; 50's "atomic" fin car Ramone; early 60's Impala (repainted to pink/white color scheme)…

They never seem to release the whole range at once but are plentiful on ebay.
