Walking across campus on busness this morning, I happened across a pretty paltry looking rummage sale being put on by some student organization. I almost breezed past it when my eye lit upon a box marked "Old Models – $2." Of course, I had to look. Most of what was inside was a broken mess of toys that even my scratchbuilding nature recoiled from. But hidden at the bottom and just barely visable was a gem!

I don't care for Star Trek, but…

…based on a quick GIS, I believe it is an AMT Rio Grande runabout from Deep Space 9. The thing was fully assembled, poorly painted, and complete. It is HUGE-about 13 inches long, and it looks like it will scale well with 28mm.

All for $2!! With some creative modifications and some kind of military paint scheme to hide its Star Trek roots, I can convert this into a really nice dropship for my 28mm sci fi troops.

Walking back across campus with a big honking starship model tucked under my arm was a bit awkward, especially when I passed a gaggle of deans-but it was well worth it!

$2 USD each, or for the box?

GreatScot7219 Mar 2010 7:51 a.m. PST

Two per model.

Yup! That's what it is, alright, and it is perfect for 25-28mm. I should know. I have one.

Thanks, Tom.

Ideas on how to make look less high-tech, anyone? I was thinking about adding conventional thruster nozzles to the engine pods and maybe a midtech-type gun turret above and behind the cockpit.

I was moving my stuff( junk to those non gamers out there) to a new storage, and found my kit of this. Thought it was long gone. It is a cool model, and plan on my using mine for 15mm lander

You should be able to strip off the warp nacelles – or at least cut off the tell-tale bussard intakes from the front (the red parts) and replace with some greeblies. Also, I'd cut off the mission pod above the hull – that'll give you a proper military look.

Convert the warp nacelles into weapon pods. The square vents on the stern are your exhaust vents.

I'd bet that a couple of those deans are closet ST geeks, so your points may have actually gone *up* with them.
