I'm looking at trying some events and so on to try and attract new gamers to the hobby. I'd like to have a nice little flyer I could hand out that would explain miniatures gaming – including historical, Sf and Fantasy. It would briefly describe minis, painting, terrain, rules and games. It would also include a bit about historical research for uniforms, OOBs etc.

Before I create my own, does anyone know of one already out there?

Here's some nice info that may be of help.

Yes there are the Osprey handouts that they did in conjunction with HMGS. Also Otto Schmitt did a handout on intro to hobby but it was several pages too long. On the HMGS website I think Bill Gray has an introduction to the Hobby that is not too bad. I had about four boxes of the Osprey's but they are either in storage or file 13'd by my Ex. Check with Heather to see if they might have some left.

I actually have an excellent example of this. Unfortunately, it's in Italian and I haven't taken the time to translate it.

In my opinion, people will not spend much time reading. If they do read, they want short paragraphs.

Color photos would be very good. A link to a website that had more info might help. If the pamphlet itself is too overwhelming (which does not take a lot these days) they will just chuck it.

A problem might be that 'wargaming' encompasses so many diverse activities that it would have to be a rather thick, dense pamphlet.
'Historical Wargaming with Model/Toy Soldiers', however, might be practicable.

Hi Mark, putting together a flyer that neatly encompasses all the aspects of miniature wargaming that you mention is a great idea, but you would have to put on alot of text, even if you were trying to keep it brief. A flyer wouldn't have enough room on it, so maybe a small pamphlet would be better.
Ed's HMGS link info is good, bur having read it Im not sure it would actually attract me to the hobby, but that's because of the writing style; it sounds a little old, and maybe something slightly punchier would be more effective…
Anyway, good luck with it, hope this has been useful!

Looks like I'll have to make my own. My thought is to have a front page about "what are these loons up to?" Then just go through it step-by-step. Pick a period (Lord of the Rings, Samurai, WW1 Fighters). Find figures, rules and terrain. Paint, paint, paint. Play!

This is not designed to "sell" someone to join the hobby. It's more of a "wow this looks cool and I want to play XXX but where/how do I start? What do I need? Where can I get it?"

I'll start at it and let you guys know how I get on…

I am surprised if Osprey did not have a PDF of the flyer on Historical Gaming. How you thought about asking them? They have put several older Ospreys on line and I see no reason they would not do so if still available.
