In the John Wayne movie "Sands of Iwo Jima" it's noted that Wayne's character, Sgt Stryker, was busted down to sergeant from a higher rank.

What was that higher rank?

Thanks!

Sgt Major, I believe he was busted for drinking.

Probably not busted for drinking per se (after all, the Marine eval form used in 2000 still had a line about coming in to work showing sings of intemperance), but rather busted for getting into a fight while drunk.

Whatever he was before being busted, I doubt that it was his original rank. Most sergeants started out as privates.

This is a wild guess but I think they all started out as civilians LOL

Yeah, but being "a civilian" is not a rank.

Some civilians are pretty rank.

Prize goes to Irish Marine! It was SGM. Finally found the right clip last night.

I knew a civilian once, he was good with ketchup!
