My group wants to try Armies of arcana, but to keep costs down, we're going it in 15mm. Since we'll need to rank up the models in units, what square basing would you recommend for that scale?

1/2" usually works for 15mm. I am not sure of the basing of AoA though. That is the size I'd use for skirmishing in 15mm.

15mm per base
so base 1 is 15mm
base 2 is 15 x 20mm
Base 4 is 30 x 30mm etc

Thats what I did.

shouldn't a base 2 be 15x30mm?

15mm square steel bases is what I used. Thane used to sell them on his website, not sure if they are commonly found now though.

As long as all the players use the same(ish) basing, it will work out fine. Even if one player has slightly larger basing, it is easy to figure out how many figures would be in base contact. The larger bases will affect wheeling maneuvers, and number of melee combatants, but I frequently mix my 20mm square based troops into an opponents 25mm based troops (28mm figs) with no problem.

Round bases can be used as well if they are placed on movement trays. It is easy to figure out who would be able to participate in the combat. Round bases are also cheaper in the form of coins and washers. I would suggest the cheap box of washers as the troops will then stick to magnetic movement trays.

I have Thanes miniatures in 15MM if you need anything to flesh out your armies.

@ HyperBunny yes you are correct, typo on my part.

The bases Thane used to sell came from Wargames Accessories wargameaccessories.com if you contact him he'll sell them to you in bigger quantity's I think when I ordered I ordered 1000 of each size 1 & 2 and it wirked out pretty cheap.

I also ordered direct from him(Wargames Accessories) and it was not too bad. Similar to using washers. And yes, base 2 should be 15 x 30 mm. Using the metal bases allows you to utilize the figures for other rules simply by making a new magnet movement tray. Trust me that playing AoA in 15mm requires some form of magnetic basing to keep you from going crazy when moving units.

I find the size of Wargame Accessories bases are not accurate, so if that matters to you, try another source. I use Litko plywood bases. They have been dead on with their cutting.

Dale, I can't say that I had any accuracy problems with the thousands I have from him.
