Hello all, I was wondering if anyone had a place or a book that I could get that would show or describe Union units and what type of uniform they wore. I want to make sure when I paint a unit I am giving them the right hat. Ninthplain |

Don Troiani's books are excellent---may not have the exact unit, though. Mike |

I'll second Don Trojani as well as Uniforms of the Civil War by Philip J. Haythornthwaite. I also encourage you to look through the discussion here on the ACW Gallery and ACW Painting Guide boards. Mike |

You can also look up specific units on the internet. Often you get reinactors and links to state library pictures. But I also must say the Trojani books are excellent. |

The number of sources, and good ones, is huge. Once you get started, you will have everything you ever could ask about pretty well covered! |

For a particular unit, I have found our fellow TMPers can often answer even the most obscure question |

Almost any uniform question is a question of time and unit. Which unit and at what time. The suggestion from Frederick is excellent. A particular unit? A particular battle? If generic Union, sky-blue trousers, four button sack coat dark blue, dark blue frock coat, infantry shell jacket dark blue, forage cap or slouch hat. If generic Confederate, in my 15mm force, in general, no two figures match. Confederate uniform is really a question of time. |

One of the best set of books you can get (if you can find them) is called "Echoes of Glory": Arms and Equipment of the American Civil War. They have a volume for Union and one for Conf. troops, along with uniforms, etc

Also be reminded
CS Sack coats were NOT as common as some people are led to believe, (by sutlers, etc
) |
