Historically incorrect. I know. Watchable or not, I wanna see it just for the dogfights!I figured it would never be in theaters in the US. It's been out for so long now. But I'll go see it anyway. link |

But apparently not to Virginia

I think the DVD will be available in June. |
idontbelieveit | 11 Mar 2010 11:20 a.m. PST |
Hmmm. A friend of mine has the DVD already. There must be a loophole somewhere. |

One member of our group said that the aerial combat was less than 15-20 minutes and the rest was completely forgettable! |
Plynkes | 11 Mar 2010 11:44 a.m. PST |
Terrible film. Save your money: Watch the flying bits on Youtube. Forget the rest. :) |
CmdrKiley | 11 Mar 2010 11:46 a.m. PST |
I was going to say, didn't we already have that brand of frozen pizza? |
Ceterman | 11 Mar 2010 12:36 p.m. PST |
You can get the DVD, (or you could at H-con) from Belle & Blade, German version or pirated Japanese version, I think. I just wanted to see the 15-20 min of flying on the big screen. Very limited US release, & it does say the "Official" DVD release is June 1. I guess I'll just rent it
I've been waiting for this since I saw The Blue Max in 1967, pity it's not what is should have been. That movie sparked my lifelong interest of WW1 air & history in general. It sucks to wait some 40 odd years to be let down like this. Very depressing

Sorry to hear there is so little actual flying in it. |
ajbartman | 11 Mar 2010 2:58 p.m. PST |
Any flying is better than no flying at all. |
miscmini | 11 Mar 2010 3:14 p.m. PST |
Is there any flying or is it just computer graphics? |
Wargamer Blue | 11 Mar 2010 3:50 p.m. PST |
When it came to Australia a couple of months ago I was very excited and bought a copy. The biggest disappointed ever. The worlds greatest wasted opportunity. Watch the trailer because they put all the good bits on that. |
McWong73 | 11 Mar 2010 4:53 p.m. PST |
have to agree, the trailer pretty much shows all the aerial scenes. Those dog fights are the best I've ever seen in any movie, but they don't last long. The rest of the film is hit and miss – my wife liked it so your partners might appreciate a different type of war film. There are some actual flying shots, but only of take offs and landings. The CGI dogfights are truly the best I've ever seen, and it's a crying shame they didn't do more. |

IMHO, the problem with the movie was the mischaracterization of Richtoven, the romance aspect, and the fact it was made into yet another anti-war message movie. While there is nothing necessarily wrong with any of these messages, and it is a perfectly valid objective to put something in a movie to attract the female demographic, it doesn't always have to be this way, and IMHO diluted the movie so that neither gender got a "solid" story. Damon. |
miscmini | 11 Mar 2010 5:17 p.m. PST |
So, it sounds like a WWI version of the Japanese sneak attack on an American love triangle that was
. Pearl Harbor (the movie). |
McWong73 | 11 Mar 2010 5:25 p.m. PST |
No it's not Pearl Harbour bad. Damon nailed it in his review, it's not enough of any one thing. |
John the OFM | 12 Mar 2010 11:18 a.m. PST |
So
It seems that they tried to make Richtofen a Nice Guy? That was their first mistake. |
Ceterman | 12 Mar 2010 12:08 p.m. PST |
So OFM, Just what kind of guy was he? I didn't realize you knew the man personally! They didn't need to change the real story. Nice or not, the real story of von Richtofen is captivating enough. I'm sure there were plenty of a#*holes on our side too. Peter |
quidveritas | 12 Mar 2010 4:14 p.m. PST |
Sheesh! Go see it, buy some popcorn, and enjoy the entertainment it provides. The trailers look great! Just because the Germans didn't like it doesn't mean US audiences will feel the same way. When did Hollywood ever 'get it right'? mjc |
Whatisitgood4atwork | 12 Mar 2010 6:34 p.m. PST |
Funny. It was on TV here two or three days ago. Not great. Not terrible. But not even trying to be accurate. The movie was punctuated by a series of face-to-face encounters between Richtoffen and Brown where they chatted about the meaning of life, which was just uber-silly. Worth a watch of TV, but I wouldn't go out of my way. |
John the OFM | 12 Mar 2010 7:04 p.m. PST |
So OFM, Just what kind of guy was he? I didn't realize you knew the man personally! Oh, a Prussian aristocrat who enjoyed killing people and took trophies

Brett Longworth | 13 Mar 2010 6:36 a.m. PST |
Hired it on DVD. Awful dialogue, contrived plot, lifleless characterisation. This film strays so far from history to appeal to a mass market that it looses any feel for Richtoffen as a man or the time in which he lived. There are a few nice shots of the Western front and the WWI aircraft look good on the ground. However, when they take to the skies (which is rare) the battle scenes look too cluttered with CGI planes. I'd rather re watch the Blue Max, which was a better film in every way. |
inverugie | 14 Mar 2010 2:33 p.m. PST |
It has about as much to do with MAnfred von Richtghofen as 'Braveheart' did about William Wallace: co-opting some known names into a completely fictional (and contrived) narrative. IMHO, actually worse than 'Flyboys'! |
Brett Longworth | 16 Mar 2010 5:26 p.m. PST |
I agree with inverugie. I too preferred 'Flyboys' as atleast that film had a sense of fun and didn't take it self too seriously. |
Daffy Doug | 17 Mar 2010 9:26 a.m. PST |
Gone, are the days when flying was really flying. Waldo Pepper beats all in that regard (still waiting for a wide screen DVD)
. |
Tom Scott | 13 Apr 2016 9:23 a.m. PST |
I didn't think it was possible for any WW1 "flying" movie to be worse than the truly awful "Flyboys", but "Red Baron" beats it hands down for crimes against the cinematic art. What a stinker! (Yeah, I just watched it for the first time, though I bought the dvd years ago). |
