I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on answers to these questions:

First Case:

A Union infantry rgt charges a Rebel rgt. The Reb rgt fires and causes 20 percent casualties on the Union rgt. The Union rgt takes the Morale test to charge home and gets a halt and volley result. No melee ensues.

In the Morale Phase at the end of the turn should the Union rgt take a Morale check for having suffered 10 percent casualties?

Second Case:

Assume the same facts as in the First Case. In addition in the Fire Phase another Rebel rgt fires on the same Union rgt and independently inflicts another 10 percent casualties. Does the Union rgt take a Morale test in the Morale phase as a result of this fire?

Thanks for your answers

2nd edition of the rules p. 43 (Chapter 12 Morale) Notes section on right hand side:
"Units that lost 10% or more casualties as a result of charging do not test again in this phase."

My understanding is essentially, the unit has already taken one morale check this turn and either passed or failed. Thus, even in the second case, there would not be a recheck this turn.

JRIII Requires a check each time but IIRC Guns At Gettysburg does not.

I saw that, but didn't understand what was meant by "lost 10% or more casualties as a result of charging"

I guess it should read took 10% or more casualties from shooting in the charge phase.

Thanks.

B,

Good point – yes it does refer to shooting casualties.

Noted taken down for when I need to write the Second edition!

Thanks.
