Ok, you pirate weapon experts . . .

Imagine a ship load of 17th or 18th century pirates shipwrecked on a lost world island (like Kong's Skull Island, or Caprona/Caspak, or even the world of Pellucidar):

If they lost most of their cannon in the shipwreck, how well would muskets, cutlasses and pikes do against such creatures?

Would the pirates have any chance at all?

They'd split into two or three parties and wipe each other out in an orgy of treasure fueled betrayal while the 1st mate would find the chieftan's beautiful daughter and go native.

The terrifying local fauna would simply speeed up their demise.

I agree with kyoteblue: build a fort!

The problem with 17th – 18th century firearms are their pathetic accuracy and slow load time. Taking a 10 seconds to reload can be fatal when charged by a prehistoric behemoth.

Well I would be worried more about the natives!

Pirates tend to be quite resourceful, they could lure creatures into a defile and then crush them with boulders.
Get a creature in a pit trap, empty in some home brew alcohol and instead of a dino barbecue, (because I bet they don't taste like chicken!) tame it.

Ride it with a howdah, now the native are not going to mess with you!

The same goes for Kong, turn him into a wino! Just remember to keep out of the way when he has a hangover!

Burning alcohol can also make a quick defensive fire

I always thought the bones scattered about the island when the modern guys visited were the bones of the pirates that tried to live on it a century before.

Just remember you only have to run faster then the guy with the peg leg.

Good idea, build a wood fort, that the dinos can either knock down, or jump over.

They'll probably use the sticks as toothpicks, after finishing with their delicious human appetizers.

I imagine there probably won't be time to build a proper stone fort. Still, I guess you could try. Just don't make too much noise, since dinos are attracted to that.

Well, I hope your planning to have some women pirates, without them, a bunch of pirates marooned on an island, might bring a whole new meaning to the pirate term of "Booty". oh yeah I had to go there LMAO :D

Back on the game, I would think they would build a ballista, something big enough they could defend with, and smaller one they would carry, as they moved around the island and save their powder for something more like attacks from natives.

Being pirates, I'd imagine them building a boat or two, then sailing off to capture a bigger boat…. ;)

I bet that we will never find out, since the Pirates on a lost world are lost.

Several ship loads of Dutch crews from the 17th Century didn't do too well in Western Australia. A few of them managed to get rescued by sending a ship's boat to Java, but several other crews didn't make it – the wrecked ship has been found, but not even a skeleton from the crew, just a few fires with salvage on the cliff tops, others are just names in the records, we haven't even found a wreck.

Some even earlier Portugese crews seem to have survived long enough to 'marry' into the local tribes as there are a few traces of Portugese loan words in some North Western Australian Koori dialects.

I'm planning a mixed (savage worlds) RPG/tabletop campain(s) with pirates venturing into Altantis populated mostly with Khurosan goodies. Several warring factions mostly non-human with pirate-level or at best VSF technology. First up is Pendraken's fishmen, who have a cannon and a Neptune.

The premise being that at the time of the Flood the (Christian) god was warring against the old (pagan/Greek)gods. He (or your choice) plucked the nation of Atlantis from the world and tossed it aside. The old gods recovered it and moved near to the Earth but not on it.

Now, seperate development has resulted in several near-industrial species. THere is some leakage which accounts for shark-men and other nasty monsters.

First venture will be as a result of gaining one of the compasses made by Satan in search of a technology (sort of Greek fire) required to kill an invincible foe.

Second will be finding a short cut to China. Pendagons coming soon 10mm ape-Samurai with Khurosan's giant gorilla as opponents.

Did you see that factual programme BBC I think, last year: very small human inhabited an island with pigmy mammoths and kimodo dragons? That's their first stop! Pigmy flame-lancers on mammoths fighting dragons.

Real pirates or gaming pirates?

What I have read of the real pirates is that most of them folded like a cheap suit when faced with serious opposition – even when assured of a hanging at the end of it. Black Barts and Blackbeards crews barely put up a fight when faced with pretty certain death.

Gaming pirates would need to not face too many baddies at a time. How many biplanes did it take to off King Kong?

If you made it more modern, you could have Somalian pirates holding a native chieftain captive until the others bring enough virgins to satiate them. Throw the dino's in and chaos ensues…

Actually, if I recall the account correctly, all of Blackbeard's men were killed, or wounded, save for the guy that was supposed to blow up the ship if they lost (possibly).

No doubt, he was a bit beat up as well, being overpowered by a couple of guys from the friendly merchant sloop crew, who weren't part of the fight.

You are correct about Black Bart's crew though. Sounds like they could have fought a bit harder in order to win the day.

CC, I have played out a Pirates vs dinosaur/Lost World game. I gave the pirates a few cannon for the defensive works, ships boats armed with swivel guns, and kept the appearance of carnivores to a smaller size that could be brought down with such weapons. I placed treasure markers near a river/ lagoon system so the pirates could get some covering fire. The larger herbivores are really not killable, so can only be "persuaded" to go in other directions. If they stampede through competitors, too bad!

It all depends on how much gunpowder they have, after that they are done for.

Going to sea probably isn't a safe bet either, since if there are dinosaurs on land, there are probably some at sea too, and the flying ones will find the pirates to be easy pickings as well.

Mosasaurs, and other larger swimmers can probably swamp the boat, and pleisosaurs have long necks for finding tasty bits in small places.

And yet, these primitive men seem to makes some awesome outfits out of the reptiles they kill with their stone tipped spears:

I think that Pirates will be wearing similarly cool outfits in no time, and impressing the native females in the process.

Either that, or keep some of their typical Pirate gear to make themselves a little different from the native males.

If Ancient armies can take down an Indian Elephant with just missile and melee weapons, I think a determined group of humans could take down the smaller monsters.

Also Arabs and early European hunters were taking down lots and lots of elephants with muskets. So dont tell me you cant gun down a dino. A large bull african elephant weighs in at about 5 tons if I remember right, not much smaller then a large T-rex. You just have to hit it in the right place if you want it to go down quick otherwise it might take a while to bleed out or die of infection.

One of the giant sauropods might be a tough target. Awful hard to hit that little head up there. The heart is buried under a lot of muscle and bone. Probably better to stampede one over a cliff.

Aaar. They be monstrous Ape-ees on this here Isle. I vote we be 'treatin' with the natives to get their booty, then slip away while the largish monkey is a'feastin' on the feathered chaps who calls this place home.

I would imagine that, with a coastline like that, except for the clothes on their backs, some weapons, and whatever washes ashore, there would be very little to equip them, right?

Hmmmm, no reports back, so it appears all of the human participants got et (that means eaten for those of you unfamiliar with Southern slang).

I imagine if there are any survivors, they are too busy hiding: in caves, under boulders, or in thick forests to provide any battle accounts for us, which is a shame.

The baiting trick has possibilities, but I doubt there will be many volunteers to be an appetizer…..

Well, you might get the occasional message in a bottle but, because most of the pirates couldn't write, it's mostly made up of pictures of little stick men being chased by giant monsters.

I know there was an even better illustration on a Japanese(?) cover of one of the Pellucidar books. It showed a Pirate ship, in full sails, ramming a huge prehistoric reptile.

It sure would be nice to see that cover again.
