So, inspired by an excess of zeal and a deficit of common sense, I picked up a couple of ACW rules sets (JR3, F&F, and TCHAE) recently. I'm liking the look of JR3 despite its apparent complexity, because it's regimental level and because it seems to offer a lot of neato options…if I figure out how to play and who to play against. However, dumb question for you all: if I use the 10mm Old Glory guys, how do I base 'em? JR3 appears to use three guys to a base, with specific rules-related reasons for doing so, and my understanding is that OG's figures are in 5-man ranks. Also, just three guys to a base…might look a little wimpy, you know? What do I do? How is this handled by real people?

The OG 10mm ACW figures are great to paint and turn out really nicely. There is no way you want to clip the bases. As you mentioned, three men will look wimpy. Plus the bases are thick and the edges will curl up when you clip them. Too much work by far.

I don't know what the rule specific reasons are for having three men to a base so I can't comment.

Check all your strips are based to the same width. Some types of strips are 1/8" longer. Just be aware when you are basing them up.

I think these look best on bases which are 1 1/8" wide by 3/4" deep. I am going by memory on the width.

I play Johnny Reb with 10mm. About half of my Infantry is based with three per. Although nice little sculpts, Old Glory strips are difficult to adapt to JR's basing system.
You might think about going with a different manufacturer. One that makes individual figures. Mine are GFI/Minifig and Pendraken.

I plan to run two JRIII games at Little Wars. Will be a good place to see the system.

The standard base size for infantry is 1x3/4". JR3 has a somewhat odd baseing system. Only OG "marching" will fit on a 1" base. There are a lot of other regimental based games out there that are much easier to learn. I would suggest trying one of those before moving on to JR.

Also, JR is 50 yards per inch. Keep that in mind. You might be looking for a smaller scale game. 3" is 150 yards and in 15mm makes the opposing forces almost nose to nose. 10mm is a little better, but still is just not right.

I clipped my OG and they look just fine. Use a sharp plier and cut half way in the front and then half way in the back while holding the figure at the knee level. A little twist and he is separate. advancing poses for Zouvares and Confederates tend to have fragile ankles. Waer gloves as a 100 stands will leave a blister on your plier fingers. If you are doing JR3 use the advancing pose as it looks better on the base at a mere 3 figures. If you are doing FnF put 3 advancing pose in the front rank and three marching pose in the rear rank for 6 figures per base; it looks great!!!

I clip OG 10s in ACW, ancients, Napoleonics, etc all the time. Sometimes you have to choose where to clip, due to how the figures are put together, but I haven't had a problem doing it.

Johnny Reb III has fudge built into the basing system, so don't worry if they are off by 1/8 of an inch. It even discusses that on page 2 in the middle of the page and at the bottom.

CWBuff--Neat! I'd looked on the program, but must have missed your games. I'll try and check those out.

Chortle: The number of dudes on the base represents a specific number of soldiers, and it comes into play when casualties are taken or when you're shooting at folks.

HMS-Didnt add them until it was noted at jriii@yahoogroups that there were no JRIII games on the schedule. Did not make the program. One game Friday and one on Saturday, times not yet available. See you there. Might suggest that you join the yahoo group mentioned above, lots of good JRIII stuff gets discussed.

keep in mind there is a Regimental version of Fire and Fury set to come out in the next 4? months. I hear it goes to the printer sometime in April. Suspect that timing would provide copies for Historicon in July.
