What color would you use to paint these up? |

Now there's a question I'll bet no-one has asked before. |

Olive Green was the standard color for Northern and most southern carriages, I use Testor Model Masters Olive Drab. |

I painted mine Vallejo Russian Uniform. It comes across as a really faded campaign look. |

I base coated mine in black then did a wash of turpentine and a medium green from testors. Put a couple coats on and it looks good. But I like to do things the hard way. |

The guns from VMI had red carriages. There's something a little different |

I luckily stumbled into some Armory paints recently, thought their "gun carriage green" would do it, but it is way too light, Im going with their "olive green" Any Olive green should be ok though. |

here's a link to a nice set of images. Keep in mind that almost all military paint used then was glass. It would fade in sheen to a semi-glass and then a flat color over time, but iron parts, painted glogg black, always seemed to retain their sheen for MUCH longer than the wood parts. Also, the lids of the limber chests are made of copper sheet, and kept polished. They were covered by folded white canvas tarpaulins when the battery was moving. these tarps were then used over the ridge poles as shelter for the crews at night. Additionally, artillerymen carried their packs strapped to the limber chests top and front when permitted, rather than carrying them, in order to reduce the number of wagons per battery. link |
