Come on. Is there that much Starship Troopers surplus gear out?

Just watched the 2001 film "Impostor" (with Gary Sinise and Madeleine Stowe) and, to my surprise, it looked as though they got hold of a ton of uniforms and helmets from the 1997 Starship Troopers movie:

YouTube link

Then I remembered that the soldiers in the 1997 film Alien Resurrection also had similar helmets on when they were hit by the crew of The Betty.

And, last but not least, the second Firefly episode (The Train Job, 2002), also had "Starship Troopers" traveling on the train to be hit.

QUESTION:

Are there any other movies or shows with Starship Trooper look-like soldiers?

Thanks.

Dan

Babylon 5 Crusade: the EA Marines aboard the Excalibur wore SST helmets.

I lived in Wyoming when they filmed ST. They did a cattle call for over a hundred extras, if I recall correctly, all of whom were given SST uniforms to run around in during the big bug battle scenes – yes, the Bug Homeworld is Wyoming.

I'll bet there's a LOT of stuff laying around, probably owned by a single prop company who hauls it out whenever "space marines" are needed in a flick.

Shawn.

I have actually seen Morita's up for sale on eBay, as well as the helmets.

Sane Max22 Feb 2010 9:20 a.m. PST

Are we sure the helmets from SST were the Aliens ones? I thought they looked different.

I am happy to be proved wrong….

There is a reason why Stanley Kubrick burned all the models, and props from 2001:A space Odyssey. He did not want anything from the movie turning up in another movie some where.

This happens all the time for all movies, props, models, costumes being used in other movies. You just notice it for Sci-Fi movies because A) The props, models, costumes are more distinctive, and B) there are fewer Sci-fi props, models, costumes so they get re-used more often.

I don't know how many times in the 70's they reused the stupid remade golf carts from the Woddy Allen movie "Sleepers".

Goober22 Feb 2010 9:24 a.m. PST

They used the Moritas on Sliders for a few episodes. I recall one set in a sort of giant laser tag game where they had been painted neon pink and green.

The tri-barrel shogun used by the Genii in Stargate: Atlantis has shown up in a bunch of shows too. I recall seeing it in Firefly, BSG and Eureka.

And the metal troopers from Mongoose are STILL some of the hardest to find!

KEEP MAKING MORE, DOGGONE IT !!!

I am thinking of the 1997 Alien Resurrection scene where Christie (Gary Dourdan) is told to put up his hands, but then makes that ricochet shot to the soldier's helmet.

Dan
PS. The funny thing is that Gary Dourdan later goes on to play one of the guys in SST uniforms in the 2001 film Impostor.

PaddySinclair22 Feb 2010 9:39 a.m. PST

As I understand it, a lot of the gear in SST was in fact recycled from that created for "Space : Above and Beyond".

Steve Hazuka22 Feb 2010 9:39 a.m. PST

Firefly used the SST uniforms also.

Well you have to concider what an easy kill that shot was since the helmet were made out foam.

I don't know about the gear, but the ideas got "borrowed" for some later stuff— particularly the new BSG:

New Cylons = AIs (and/or Tanks) (including the apparently FTL memory transfer and the identical models)
Scar = Chiggy von Richtofen
Starbuck = Vansen, "minus the ramrod" (to quote another character from S:AAB)

CmdrKiley22 Feb 2010 11:56 a.m. PST

yeah, I don't recall any of the props from SST being in SAAB. They used a lot of modern day props (MP5s, G3, etc.)that has some light dressing on them. The overall concept of SAAB seems more inspired by the SST book in that it was the daily life soldiers in an interstellar war. I kept thinking of SAAB as being, "what if we can do SST into a TV series with a lower budget and change it enough to keep Heinlien's lawyers away from us".

BTW, nice parallels drawn between SAAB and BSG. I still like Vansen waaay more than Starbuck.

As noted, the Universal Alliance Marines in Firefly pretty much all wore SST uniforms – both on The Train Job as well as in Bushwacked

Caesar22 Feb 2010 1:50 p.m. PST

I recall seeing Forbidden Planet uniforms on The Twilight Zone.
Robby the Robot was recycled in at least one movie and an episode of Lost in Space.

retzlaffmd22 Feb 2010 1:51 p.m. PST

Sliders used more than the Morita's, the whole uniform, in different colors, was used in at least 1 episode.

doug redshirt22 Feb 2010 2:50 p.m. PST

Yeah Firefly used the SST uniforms. They mention it some where on a directors comment for the DVDs. Might of been on Serenity too.

CmdrKiley22 Feb 2010 2:57 p.m. PST

Robby the Robot was used in an episode of The Twilight Zone too.

He was also in an episode of Mork and Mindy, so was the TOS Star Trek space suit Capt. Kirk had in The Tholian Web.

Oh speaking of BSG. I remember the old Cylons being used on some series that only lasted for 3-4 episodes back in the early 80s. It involved some US Navy divers finding The Nautilus and reviving Capt. Nemo from suspended animation. Capt. Nemo helps the Navy go on to fight some villian, played by John Colicos (Baltar from BSG, and Kor from ST TOS) who's sub looked like it was recycled from a Space 1999 Eagle and piloted by a Cylon Centurion.

There were lots of BSG props recycled into Buck Roger in the 25th Century too. I remember the Colonial Shuttle being one of them.

Not exactly the same, but there was a movie called Mutiny in Space that re-used (the already heavily re-used) SFX shots from BSG into their own story. It was pretty lame, but the MST3K version is pretty entertaining. Especially the climatic golf cart duel at the end.

Sorry to digress.

Caesar22 Feb 2010 2:57 p.m. PST

BSG used two ships from Firefly.

Original Cylons were in the opening of the A Team.

I seem to remember that there was a Kids show a few years back that used them. I think it was one of the Power Ranger Shows but I don't know for sure.

Witchsmeller22 Feb 2010 6:03 p.m. PST

Yes, it was one of the Power Rangers shows.

Katzbalger22 Feb 2010 6:51 p.m. PST

Power Rangers Lost Galaxies--my favorite of the bunch (my kids loved them all--kids are now thankfully out of that stage).

The fighters in Buck Rogers were rejected concept sketches for BSG.

And of course 'Name that Airfix Kit Part' is a fun game all can play in Star Wars 4-6

Pat

Patrick R23 Feb 2010 6:42 a.m. PST

Some of the kit was modified for Planet of the Apes.

So much kit and gear was made for the movie that people have been reusing them for years.

earthad23 Feb 2010 8:56 a.m. PST

There is a place in hollywood that rents the costumes to studios. It says so on babylon 5 crusade comentry

Ethics Gradient23 Feb 2010 11:54 a.m. PST

@ CmdrKiley, to join you in your digression, would that be 'this' series

link

I remember thinking it was great, but I would have been about 5 at the time…

I also seem to recall that Serenity herself makes a brief appearance in BSG, when Rosilin visits the president before the attack.

CmdrKiley23 Feb 2010 1:15 p.m. PST

Wow that's it. Boy was I way off. I could have sworn Colicos was in it, not Burgess Merideth. I really could have sworn I saw a cylon as part of his robot crew. I think was about 7 or 8 when I saw it at the time.

CmdrKiley24 Feb 2010 7:49 a.m. PST

At least I did call that recycled Space: 1999 Eagle turned into a submarine!

That murky image is still burned into the back of my childhood's memory.

"There is a reason why Stanley Kubrick burned all the models, and props from 2001:A space Odyssey. He did not want anything from the movie turning up in another movie some where."

So I guess he missed the blue 2001 spacesuit that Sinclair wore in Babylon 5, then….? ;-)

Unless of course that was a replica made for/by a collector?
