Now that I have bought all those cool square tiles . . .

. . . I wonder if I can make them in the same configurations as all these itty bitty ones from the game "Hamunaptra, Escape De La Piramide":

What do you guys think?

What if I used these small stone tiles for the floors?

<<I've just ordered from DickBlick the following:

12 or their 9" x 12" tiles
48 of their 6" x 6" tiles>>

CC, did you ever do anything with your tiles?
If so, how did they turn out?

Amalric,

It just so happens that, the moment I got those small "Stone By Stone" tiles, I dug up the 6 x 6 hardboard tiles from DickBlick and started playing with measurements.

Hope to have a completed sample or two in the next couple of days.

Coolness.
I look forward to some pics of your samples.

I didn't particularly care for the results of what I did the day before yesterday. I used the "stone by stone" tiles and it made it all look too "busy". Either that or I just plain used too many.

It became like one of these moments here:

Anyway, I will try something a little simpler (and easier for me to duplicate too) either tomorrow or Saturday.

One project I'd worked on for a while was similar, though less of a mine type tunnel set.

I had a hive put together for an AVP campaign I was apart of.

Big things I'd used was the heavier foam insulation and superglue to melt chunks away. When painted it worked rather well and was easy to paint as well since it basically just had a thick coat of black followed by a bit of highlighting with a metallic green.

Borathan,

I would love to see pics of that hive!

By the way, AVP was the real reason behind this more recent discussion:

Hopefully, when done, my tiles will be able to come up with nice configurations like the one shown here:

I hope to add some rusted tech bits here and there, to use with time Machine "Morlocks".

Hey Dan, have you considered making the entire table from a single sheet of insulation, like celotex?

picture

I figure you could buy a whole sheet (saw some for less than £20.00 GBP a go, 4ft by 8ft) and peel off the top foil layer. Then "mine" the inner foam to your heart's content. Flat floors may be a bit tricky, but it might be worth a try.

I don't know how I missed that post!

Interesting idea. I wonder if digging all the way through, and just adding a thin sheet of styrene (from a yard sign) to the bottom could do for a room with a flat floor.

This fella did a phenomenal job with his entire complex without even using tiles, just "boxes" and connectors:

These could make nice connectors for some of those modular boxes:

I keep going back to LUDstuff's site, but wonder if I can marry the square 6" tiles method to what he did here, without looking too grid-like:

Suggestions?

I purchased a marbled, black fabric, stitched two wide pieces together, to form a cover for my 9' x 5' ping pong table. On top of this, I plan on placing walls, carved out of foam insulation sheets, to form tunnels, rooms, etc., as needed. This will allow me to string walls together, to form whatever shapes I need, without being locked into fixed sizes. By making wall sections, with rounded ends, I can butt them together, to form lengths, and shapes, as desired. Not perfect, but far more flexible, than any system mounted to a fixed base.

My reasons for going this route, is that I want to be able to do some UnderDark type fantasy battles, using BattleSystem Skirmish rules, as well as large army battles in the vast, underground caverns, similar to what Gygax hinted at, in his Drow series of RPG modules (D1-D2-D3), on the tabletop. It should also work well for my RPG games' dungeon crawls. Cheers!

Sgt,

Sounds intriguing. How does it look though? Got pics?

Thanks,

Dan

Not yet. I was experimenting with using packing foam, cutting it with an electric carving knife: foam looks great, but it need to be sealed, to take paint. Bought a tube of paintable caulking, but after looking at this thread, I've decided to skip the foam, as it is too labor intensive. Hope to buy some foam insulation sheet this week, and carve it up. I used the cloth sheet technique to create a city-scape for my Army Men games. I put cardboard building ruins on that, and it looked great, IMO. The cloth, for my dungeons, looks great by itself, but I have not gotten any dungeon walls on it yet.

When I do get it working, I will post it all on my blog. I finally put a blog together a month or so ago. Not a lot on my blog, yet, but slowly putting stuff up. I am really glad you updated this thread, as it prompted me to abandon the foam: thought it would be easier to use, very inexpensive, as I amassed numerous pieces of foam from work, and I thought it would be easy to store, and very durable. Alas, it is not to be. Cheers!

Are these for wargame in tunnels and/or mines?
What do you said Dan?
