I'm familiar with Britannia, and have been bumbling around, but haven't found much. Any suggestions?

Many Thanks,

Brian

The Italeri Battlefield Buildings no. 6130 is also useful with a watchtower, a covered first aid station, and some sandbagged positions too. I second the Airfix Jungle Outpost, it's great for Vietnam.

Scroll down, dedicated 'Nam terrain, also the jungle dwelling works too.

There is a company that makes hooches, a excellent colonial mission, fallen heads of statues etc can't find the name at the mo.

Last time I was at Petsmart they had some fairly nice hooches that were right about 20mm IIRC. In the aquarium scenery.

Might want to knock the trees off. Its a bit stylized.

Monolith designs makes six different hootches that are quite nice. Coincidentally, I am working on three of them now. I would compare the quality to Britannia.

At times, some people have had delivery trouble. I just had a little trouble getting a response to an email. ONce that was straightened out, the rest was fine. I live in the U.S. and wanted to pay by Pay Pal.

The Airfix jungle outpost is quite nice. I would asemble mine differently if I were to do it again. There is an elevated exterior walkway that looks really cool.

However, it is too narrow for most figure bases. I would take the trouble to convert it by widening that if I were to do this building again.

Another neat building to use is an HO model railroad gas station. You want one that looks good for the 1960's. Walther's, the railroad people, have several.

You might also look for model railroad buildings that look suitable for the south of France. I have one residence that is great. One of the neatest things I enjoyed about Vietnam was the French colonial architecture. Suitable buildings are few and far between, but a few can be found. These and the gas station would not work in a jungle village, but for small towns, or the outskirts of the same, they are fun.

Also availabel form Walther's is a Prieser item number 17502, "Baskets. Fruits, vegetables (loose)". Both Britannia and Monolith have a few food containers sitting around, but these Prieser items really add a lot.

I also added some benches outside. They were simple to make. Just a small piece of balsa wood on four plastic rods for legs.

On one of my Monoliths, I extended the end of the base with Milliput (epoxy putty). Then I made a little corrugated sheet metal roof like a lean to at that end. The supports were balsa wood squares.

The corrugated sheet came from Precision Produts.

They make a lot of neat scratch building veneers.

Details like the benches, baskets of food, and the lean to roof help bring the buildings to life.

Note that there is no apostrophe in "Walthers"…

Mainly Military – that was the manufacturer I was thinking of.

I 'second' the offerings from Frontline-excellent value for money……….

dwight shrute28 Dec 2009 12:03 p.m. PST

garry owen – yes the roofs come off …. the 2 piece one on the larger hooch is a tad annoying and needs some improvising …

dwight shrute28 Dec 2009 12:04 p.m. PST

village green also did a wonderful 20mm nam buildings range , but since stronghold took them over its been unavailable .

nazrat28 Dec 2009 2:56 p.m. PST

The Mainly Military models look great but they are for 28mm-- aren't they a little large for 20?

Garryowen Supporting Member of TMP29 Dec 2009 12:49 p.m. PST

Nazrat, you may be right, but their website has them listed as 20mm.

Dwight, thanks for the reply re the roofs.

Does anyone know for sure if they ae 20mm or 28?

I sent them an email yesterday about the roofs and got no reply so far. TMP is the quickest source of info.

Hmm, this site has them listed at 28mm. link I'd love for them to be 20mm as that is the scale in which I play Vietnam. I have the Frontline, Britannia, and Airfix buildings and all are great. I plan on buying a number of the ones from Monolith, especially after you compared them favorably to Britannia's hooches, Garryowen.

Sterling Moose29 Dec 2009 1:39 p.m. PST

I have some of the Mainly Military, I think they fit in fine with 20mm.

dwight shrute30 Dec 2009 2:43 a.m. PST

I think there are two lines of Vietnam buildings from Chiltren, one in 20mm and one in 28mm. THe 20mm are under the heading Mainly Military Scenics.

Thanks for clearing this up dwight and Sterling. Sterling, your photos are great. That colonial mission is something I have always wanted since I first saw it on Alcal's Vietnam posting. I may try to do something like it by scratch.

I guess I will have to plan on getting the 20mm from Chiltren.
