I am contemplating a move to ACW using GHQ 10mm and the MicroForce rules. Could some please tell me the base sizes so I can them ordered? Thank you. |

Base sizes are recommended, not demanded. Infantry 1" x 0.75" Cavalry 1" x 1" Artillery 1" x 4.25" Caisson/Limbers 1" x 4.25" Officers 0.75" x 0.75" By the way, I like the period flavour in this ruleset. The chart on cohesion is subtitled "Steady, Boys!" The chart on combat results is subtitled "Butcher's Bill." |

I like this set of rules and I think it's well worth giving them a go. Incidentally, the base size for artillery quoted by cotedelachevre might seem big but is correct. It is meant to show the 'footprint' of an artillery battery. The author of the rules explains his reasons for it here: link However, in practice you can mount your artillery on 1" x 1" bases and just park your limbers behind them to achieve the same effect. |

You should be aware that a 1" wide base is pretty much the standard for acw rules. How deep they are is really not that important, although you should make them as shallow as possible. 3/4 inch deep for infantry is fine. You will find many rules systems that use the same dimentions, or can be adapted, so build your army, and be confidant that whether a stand represents 3 men,100, 150, 200, or even 500 men, you can use the same stands. |

Old thread but a few questions: If I am doing a six gun battery would I do three 1 x 1 stands, each representing a section, and then the limber, etc. on a 1 x 3 behind it? Do I do any kind of command stand with the battery for officers? |

I have a infantry question also, sorryif these sound like beginnners questions but I am a beginner. I am doing Jacksons valley campaign (I know, original). Some of the regiments are as small as 150 men and some up to 650 (rounded). At 70 +- men per stand would I use two stands for a 150 man regiment and 9 for a 650 man regiment? Are officer or command stands in addition to the regiment? Or are they instead at a brigade or division level? Would one of the regiment stands include the officers and another the flags? And is cavalry used all that much for these games? I see screening before the battle and persuit after but can they be used during for flanking attacks and the like? |

jaxenro, sorry no one got back to you on these good questions - ==================================================== I have a infantry question also, sorryif these sound like beginnners questions but I am a beginner. I am doing Jacksons valley campaign (I know, original). Some of the regiments are as small as 150 men and some up to 650 (rounded). I do not have these rules but the standard in most rules is you count the command stand as one of the unit/regiment. ======================================================== At 70 +- men per stand would I use two stands for a 150 man regiment and 9 for a 650 man regiment? Correct as you have written. =============================== Are officer or command stands in addition to the regiment? Or are they instead at a brigade or division level? Would one of the regiment stands include the officers and another the flags? Command, at the unit/regiment level you might have an officer plus the flag carrier, some gamers will have a drummer on this stand as well. The Union units had two flags, the National and the regimental while the Rebels would most often have just one flag (Rebel Battle Flag or many units out west had special flags, Cleburne Division Blue Flags (also called Hardee). Note this is for fun so many gamers will add the state flag to the Rebel unit for color, this was seen in the early war as the units marched off to war, it gives a neat look on the game table. Your Brigade command and higher level, you could have a mounted officer on a base, some would use a round base for this vs. the Square, Brigade- you could have a mounted officer with a foot officer next to him, an aide maybe. For your Division you then could use more, maybe two or three mounted men to show the staff with the General, this helps to understand who is who on your game table. You can buy mounted men with flag staffs and flags for higher command are available, looks great also. ===================================================== And is cavalry used all that much for these games? I see screening before the battle and persuit after but can they be used during for flanking attacks and the like? Yes, lots of companies sell Cav., both mounted and dismounted, this is a latter add on for most gamers as it cost more and you have to paint up the unit twice (on horse and on foot). Hope you enjoy your game table, John |
