This can be from any historical period, the only rule is that it has to have been worn and fought in by a unit of at least a couple of hundred men. |
Mikasa | 07 Dec 2009 7:13 a.m. PST |
I suppose I should mention mine. For me it's the 1815 French Empress Dragoons. They just look nails, but nails with style! |

a couple of hundred men?? My favorite uniform is that worn by the Amazons; a couple hundred women: link |

She can't be a real Amazon as she has a pair of tatas. That was their most noted uniform aspect. |

It isn't a uniform, but my favourite look for a soldier is the bronze armoured, corinthian helmeted hoplite. |

The one I seem to to have painted the most over the decades is WW2 British Army battledress with 37 pattern webbing. I can paint that with my eyes shut in any scale from 6mm to 54mm. Not really my favourite, as they are very bad men with a deeply warped world view, but most striking/smartest/scary are SS Leibstandarte parade uniforms. Hugo Boss knew what he was doing and created a very strong brand image, if your tastes run to death cult fetish wear. |

I reject your "worn by a couple of hundred men" criterion. Simply because I think the uniform of the British Legion is way cool. Green coat, black facings, buckskin breeches, and a cool hat. Ban's legs don't hurt either. picture |

The British Pras from WWII had a sharp uniform. I also have to give a honorable mention to the German SS in smocks, the late 19th century Imperial German uniform, and the 1812 Russian uniform. Too much good stuff to choose from. |

Modern U.S. Marine dress blues. Those things just look sharp! I second the motion! I was Army infantry and the only thing I will ever envy those guys are their issue dress. Army "blues" and Army "Whites" almost make it. |

She can't be a real Amazon as she has a pair of tatas. That was their most noted uniform aspect. That's a Victorian myth. No Greek source ever suggested the concept, which is absurd anyway; breasts don't interfere with even a cheek-drawn bowstring. I'm partial to the Continental Army officer's dress: link Or this version, with the red facings & cuffs: link |
Supercilius Maximus | 07 Dec 2009 9:40 a.m. PST |
<<a couple of hundred men?? My favorite uniform is that worn by the Amazons; a couple hundred women>> Yes, but hundreds of men probably fought to get into those uniforms, too. |

With respect to the traditional Greek fustanella, I have to point out that they drove the Turks out of their country wearing those things in a very tough, though under-gamed, war. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fustanella Also, some of us had to wear those as kids in folk-dancing groups. Andrew |

Always had a weak spot for French Napoleonic cuirassier uniforms. Those uniforms probably started my interest in the era. Close runner ups include: Some militia uniforms from the very start of the ACW are quite nice too. Almost all hussar uniforms. There are a few with horrible colors but most are great. |

I'm partial to the US Spanish-American War uniforms. I like it when uniform is similar to "national dress" -- this is why Highland units are cool. So for the US, soldiers that look like cowboys FTW! |

Spanish officers during the Peninsular War wore what they wanted and were usually bright and incongrous!! My fave type of un-uniformed uniform
Although I do have a liking for British cut down uniforms in the AWI--Tough and practical

All the uniforms of the Franco Prussian War troops. Not a bad one in the lot. One the most colorful wars of all time. Love the red kepis and red pants! The French Carabiniers were even more colorful under Napoleon the Little. |

I wish to correct John the OFM (tongue in cheek)
The British Legion wear black berets, dark blue blazers and grey flannel trousers, and occasionally eggy ties, and all set off with a chestful of gongs
. :) However, I agree with Augustus
.. I vote for British scarlet as worn around the globe, on parade, on campaign, and in the pub just before the fight started. oooooooh, reminds me of all those pink countries on the atlas at school in the good old days, before Labour politicians started meddling in military affairs. |

Well, much as I do like USMC dress blues (Semper fi!) I would vote for classical high Victorian British uniform, notably the foreign service issue – red jackets, white helmets, white webbing and dark blue trousers |

I view uniforms by periods. Napoleonic is probally the prettiest but I love the funky interwar period uniforms of the early to late 1930's. In general the whole era had that art noveau thing going on. |
